Scott....it's actually more work (I believe) and takes more time, doing what I'm doing. Trying to build a specific dog.

I guess I could just say..."Who has a BMC or Catahoula or Hound that will hunt out medium range, strike a hog, grab nuts but not catch ear? Oh....and I'm not paying more than $500 for it." I dont know that there are many dogs out there like that....in ANY breed. I could probably get close but its not gonna be EXACTLY what I want. Gonna take a little more work than that.

I do know that putting a good mt cur in a bay pen with a big hog and after a couple of times they will learn to stop a hog pretty good...the bay pen builds confidence because the dog learns just how close to get and put teeth and not take a hit...I just don't do those things any more...just don't have that burning desire like I did as when I was a younger man...

jokingly... I have some "walkahoulas".
They are Walker x Catahoula cross.. The gyp is NALC cat and the Walker was a freebie from a deer guy and has been nothing but a natural hog dog.

I haven't been hog dogging that long but these two dogs are doing really well at a year old.  They are striking hogs and will trail for hours with our pack of hounds barking (yip) every breath.  They are fast and agile.  One is a little more leggy than the other and I can't wait to turn them out with our pack of hounds this year at the hunting club!

Running walker X cur. Lots of bottom lots of hunt lots of speed lots of brain not as gritty or rough as some people prefer though. Not many spots on mine though! Look more like a saddle back long hair mutt

Kevin, here's how I see it (and like you, it's just my opinion). Someone needs more grit in their dogs...how do they get there? Add APBT. Need more nose and range/bottom...add hound (or bird dog). Want to add size and grit...add AB or Dogo. Want track speed...add greyhound. Now, is it really easier to get all those things when staying within a singular breed, or can you get there faster by cross breeding?

When I was trying to figure out what kind of dogs I wanted to get as my own I knew 2 things I wanted rough and I wanted a nose. I had always thought a redbone would make a good hog dog even tho I had never seen anyone I knew run one. We had some when I was a kid and they were good dogs and talking with my old man he figured they would work well. That was my nose. My second dog was a ridgeback. I figured a dog breed with the intent many years ago to hunt hogs and lions should be plenty rough but figured I would never have one. Well I got both. My red ones ended up crossed with curs but they still have a good nose and rough to boot. My ridgeback came crossed with a pit. That sucker can run all day and hates to load up when time to go home. He hunts as hard as any dog I've seen and is my RCD so I got the rough I wanted with nose to boot. Now if I can get them knot heads to only hunt hogs I would be in good shape. Lol

if I want grit and size it would be a leggy pitbull and then cut that to a 1/4...if I want speed on track it would be a fast running walker...one that runs to catch coyotes...because greyhound is a sight hound and don't want to lose nose or tracking ability so greyhound is out...cut the running walker back to a 1/4 as well... if the line of dogs is pretty close but need a little extra that is how I would do it...just cut to the chase and be done with it...

If I wanted to just catch hogs I would go with bird/bull cross . Cull out the ones that wouldn't catch and keep the range down to about 800 yards. But that is not for me I like to hear my dog bay rather than hogs sqealing everytime.

I believe It is easier to achieve your goals and get them more consistently by staying not only within a breed, but by breeding dogs with common ancestry. The trick is, find the greatest dog you can no matter what county or state it's in or who owns it and go make pups. Also, people need to be more honest about whether their bitch or dog is even breedworthy. Too many of these hog slayers out here let their imaginations get the better of them and believe they got a dog when what they have is probably average at best. Is it better to breed your average dog to another average dog or build relationships with folks better than you and get your hands on pups better than you've so far seen

The best cross I've seen is pit or american bulldog crossed to bird dog. Very common in Georgia. Also pit or AB crossed with redbone.

Go hunt with some guys with some damn good dogs and be humble about it and take it as a learning experience whether good or bad and go from there.

I don't wanna know about your dog that you're bragging on, I wanna know about that dog that other people are bragging on that's owned by the feller that never opens his mouth.

T-Bob....I hear what your saying.

Im going to be walking a fine line here trying to purvey my thoughts so I want to chose my words wisely. I don't want this to sound like it has any negative connotation at all.

There are guys on this forum that I respect....Some I know personally....Some Ive only chatted with....others I have never even made contact with. I KNOW that these guys have good to great dogs. Some I've seen with my own eyes...others I've only read about. These dogs all produce pork on a regular basis. These dogs ALL have attributes that are desirable. Out of all the dogs I've seen with my own eyes....NONE of them are EXACTLY what I want. The ones I've only read about....as good as they may be....I can't be sure (since I haven't seen them hunt) they are what I want.

Of course.....I would love to have any one of these dogs I'm specifically talking about living on my yard or at least access to breeding. There was a lot of work put into some of these lines to achieve the results they have. I would LOVE to hunt behind these dogs but I would still be working towards a specific goal and that means I would be breeding and crossing these dogs....trying to achieve my perfect dog. Just the fact that I'm honest about that puts me on the black list (as they say) as far as a lot of these guys are concerned.

There are only a couple of people I've spoken with that....I think....KNOW how I feel about a couple of their dogs and that's as close to begging as I will go, lol.

I'm not a dog peddler....I'm not a glory hound, lol. Im not one to get a dog/pup and go to bragging about its name/line. I just love this sport and I have a specific path I'm traveling and Ill get there sooner or later with or without any big name help.

Kevin, I like what you are saying about wanting to breed your own "perfect" dog. Honestly when you step back and look at it each and every single one of the truely great dogmen in history did the same thing you are looking to do and they did what they had to in order to get their line of dogs to be "perfect" in their eyes........ If none of those particular lines are "perfect" in your eyes then it's up to you to make your own perfect dog.

I do see the two sides to the statement you made about being "blackballed" by some simply because in essence you would be diluting a line of dog that someone bred specifically to suit their individual needs. However your needs and my needs may be completely different therefore taking a line of dogs a different direction may be necessary for you to achieve your own "perfect" dog. I have given away and sold a couple dogs out of the particular dogs I own and while I can't say that I particularly want to see them bred to a different style of dog I wouldn't be the least bit mad at anyone that saw fit to breed them to a dog that they believe will enhance the offspring, hell thats what its all about!..........your method to get to the "perfect" dog and mine may be completely different but i'd bet my bottom dollar that at the end of the day we are both looking to do 1 thing and that is to make the "perfect" dog  Wink

and guys at the end of the day your the only one you need to please.

I've always said raise what you like to hunt.  Like in all breeds you can find Aggressive and passive lines. Cold, medium, or hot noses. Small, medium, large dogs, slow, medium, fast dogs. short, medium, long range.  Once you find what you like to look at and hunt behind, then you tweak it to your style and clean up the little things.  I truly do think you can do this in one line or breed of dogs without cross breeding, but once you make that cross keep working on it till you fine tune it.

Good luck Reuben on finding or breeding what you like. I know I like these leopards, but they may be a little mouthy for you and they not stop'm hard or fast enough.  I do know there are silent leopards on track and some realllllll gritty ones that'll stop a bear.  The ones I have  are just perfect for me and that's all that counts.  I kinda got the feeling from reading your threads and posts, you'll get it all worked out. May even have a "Reuben Cur"  line in a few years showing up with BMC and Omc.....

keep us posted on whats to come....

^this is the answer. For me... I hate pups and the thought of breeding, but a few in my crew are taking a liking to my Parker x Mellman gyp. I don't talk up my dogs at all... But if she continues, my first breeding will be in a year or two to a stud Parker or mellman. I am not a re-invent the wheel type guy either. I am sure that many people down the line have crossed dogs to get this or that and that is why we have some of the breeds we have. Sure there are some superstars born from random crosses but why try a cross and HOPE for the best than go off of bloodlines and positive traits/hunt and add science to the breeding to MAKE the best. We have our loose dogs, rough dogs, catch dogs, etc... But breeding hunt to no hunt is adding more dogs to the dog trade and knocking breeding programs back a few years till the nose is brought back all for a small percentage of grit or cd blood that is almost bred out. Not trying to down grade anyone or their programs, just my way of thinking and my .02c. I have my bay dogs and when they do their job I have a catch dog... What more does a man need?
