So set out last night to make a quick run waited till 1030 so it would cool down some. Dropped out in pasture got on set of hogs had dogs everywhere baying. Dog went treed so headed to him. He hadnt covered but maybe 2 miles total from truck to where i found him and rode half that on ranger. Found laid over on his side limp breathing really fast. Rushed him back to ride and started cooling him off got him back to truck and cooled down after about hr he got where he could stand up but was blind. then this morning he seemed fine could see was jumping around barking. I was confused bc general my dogs cover 15-20 miles on a hunt and he got hot in 1000 yds. My question is Do i need to be worried about hunting him again? Once they have a heat stroke are they more likely to have another? any advice will help thanks guys

I have lost a few to the heat,the ones i have had,after the stroke they was never there self agian,some times half there body dosent work,and they made circles round and round.it sucks i lost a closed mouth black and tan that was a very good dog last yr and he kinda started like u said yours did.

While that does sounds like a heat stroke that is strange......I don't know how a dog could even get that hot in that distance....... I have heard from any and everyone that i've hunted with and been around that once a dog overheats the first time he is more suceptible to overheating again, I can't say that im 100% convinced that what happened was a simple case of a dog overheating though, that sure is strange......... wish the best for the dog and you. I personally would just hold him at the buggy until you have a solid bay and turn him to it a couple times.......not so much for him to help at the bay but more for you to be able to watch him closer to gauge how he acts the next couple times you put him on the ground.

I'm not a vet but that don't sound like heat to me. I mean unless u have a closed box and he spent a long time in it and was already real hot before u dropped him. It could be a straight out stroke or seizure or other issue. Have u had the dog checked for heart worms? Even on ivomec he could still have worms. I have seen ivomec fail more than once.

Agree with Shotgun...had a pup a few years back get sepperated where bay broke...he ended up back tracking to original strike point (1/2 mile) then back to bay point...then picking up the newer trail and tried to catch up with the older dogs. He covered probably 3-4 miles which isn't that much but this pup wasn't conditioned well and towards the end of the hunt it was around 80 degrees. When I found him he was layed out. I took him back and cooled him off. He never stood up. Next morning still layed out...got some water and IV into him and went to work. Came home and he had moved but still layed out. It took 3 days before he was back to himself. I still hunt in warm weather but whether a dog/pup is conditioned or not, I ain't got any issues with cutting/calling dogs off. Better than losing them. But again...what your describing doesn't sound like heat. |

Does he have a heart condition do you know?
A bad heart can make them drop like that as well.....

Heats a big problem here.
Is he a fit dog? If so might be worth getting his heart checked.
Also we have found that after heatstroke they can be susceptible to a virus that attacks the kidneys. Make sure he's well hydrated and I would ease him back into it over the next month or so...Not to much work too soon. Our theory is that it gives the kidneys time to repair.
For heatstroke we carry either saline or hartmanns solutions (saline + glucose + water) use a 50cc syringe and inject the solution under the skin. It adsorbs quickly and can mean the difference between a dead and a live dog.....

In the 1000 yards was he trailing hog,baying hog are fighting the hog.the black and tan i was talking bout had been on the hog for 4 r 5 hrs in 75 degree weather,and was fighting hog tooth and nail to keep him bayed.for 45 mins,before i could get to him with catch dog.wen hog was caught.dog on lead he just fell over,breathing hard,found a ditch wiwater cooled best i could.he came to ,walked side ways.was blind,his sight got a lil better the next day,he was never the same.i hope its not heat.my 2 cents,this is wat ive seen.

I will get the heart checked out because he is fit i mean my dogs do 12-20 miles on dang near every hunt because my places are so big. This happend after he had only been on the ground a total of 35 minutes from the time i dropped him to the time i picked him up
