I have a tree in my front yard that died this year. I have asked many people that have came by and no one can agree as to what it is..

Anybody know for sure?

It looks like a pin oak (sp ck). It would b easier to id if u could find a live 1 n post pics of the leaves. But goin by bark n limb formation, pin oak or white oak. What did the acorns look like?

  that would be my guess white oak . the limb structure it could be a red as well  . to hard to tell from the picture . did it have big acorns or little acorns on it .  the drought coupled with the oak wilt here in east texas has took it's toll at the house . I have a lot of fire wood cutting to do  .  lost some good tree's on this place , but it needed thinning out a bunch  .

Here is a picture of the leaves on the tree next to it. I believe they are the same trees.

The real question is... Is it good cooking wood or should I have a bonfire?

Cook or smoke away. Most hardwoods r good cookin/smokin wood.

It's a pin oak. See them almost everday between the school year with forestry and when im not in school because my dad owns a tree cuttin buisness.

you might get Ray to look at the picture...does not look like pin oak to me...I am not familiar with the other oak trees except the live oak...

I just looked at the pic of the leaves on the pic he posted. I had only looked at the first pic. The leaves do look like a water oak! The pic of it standing looks like a pin oak.

Not sure if they are good to cook with but they are a pain to have around your house in a hurricane, they drop branches something awful.
