The one we run here is pretty darn tenacious, and she'll hang in there with the big dogs...

They are rough, have more drive than most. They track well and can run miles without getting winded. Problems are they are super trashy. They typically won't bother cattle or horses, but they will run anything else that is furry. I have had them run coon, skunk, porcupines, deer and even a damn chipmunk. I was pretty pissed when I pushed through 800 yards of briars just to find a dog running around a tree chasing a chipmunk.
They are also slow in a swamp. They just don't have the leg for it. They are great find dogs in the swamp though. You better run them with some rough dogs or you won't stop them in a swamp. Also, they are so rough it takes a while for them to learn to bay. They never will bay as a group. The second dog in better be able to catch because as soon as that Jagd sees or hears another dog it is going to catch.

Mine was rough and extremely hard headed. Bad to fight anything, anytime, anyplace. Hard to cut. I wound up leaving mine in the woods because she would not come in and load up. She would come close but not close enough to load up.
I don't tolerate a dog that won't load or go with me so we parted company.

Independant is 1 thing, a dog that flat out wont load in the trailer or let u catch it at the end of the hunt is a cull in my eyes. Ive done the exact same thing.

This dog would come in real close but not let you catch her. She knew exactly what she was doing and basically told me that she would do what she dang well pleased. AND this was the third time that I would have to make another trip back to where we were hunting to pick her up. I made that trip twice but not a third time.
I learned my lessons on this many years ago with bird dogs. There is no telling how many miles I drove to pick up sorry dogs that would not come in and load. Not long ago I left a catahoula in the woods because of the same thing.
I am an old man now and have learned many lessons on dogs and many of them the hard way. If any dog does not want to hunt for me and to the direction I am headed AND load up when I tell it will get left right there. Somebody else can feed that cull.

Here is the rest of the story on the Jag. About 3 days later a guy called me and told me he had my dog. I asked him if he liked her and he said not especially. Then I told him to shoot her because I was not driving another foot to pick her up. He says he will give her to a friend in Louisana. I ask for his address and told him I would mail her papers because she was registered.
She winds up in Tibbedeaux, La. and the story gets better. The La. guy calls me about the dog and tells me he has a male named Max. Come to find out that was the same dog that I tried to breed her to earlier. He jumped on her and was about to kill her when I laid him out cold with a hoe handle. Max had killed the last female he tried to breed.
La Guy asked me if she would bay a hog and I told him not only would she bay she would catch it too. He did not believe me until he turned her in on a sow in a guys pen. She eat the sow up and he had to get out the bulldog to catch the sow so he could get Jag loose. Jags bite hogs all over. Jag and Max wound up hunting hogs in cane fields in Tibbedeaux, La..

hey Mike...about 15 years ago I saw one of your culls hunt right thru our deer lease around freer...dog loved hunting for itself and didn't care about anyone else...it was a nice eng. pointer...either that or the dog was deaf...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

I could always get one to come to me.I know exactly that hard headed attitude when they know you said here and know exactly what it means but choose to take off and act like they are hunting when you get close to the truck. I put a shock collar on them and a long cord or not I say here and fry them until they come. It's only taken me about five or six trys on the most hard headed to get them to start coming I had them coming from a couple hundred yards. If i said here and could hear me they started toward me. I have only owned Jones dogs so maybe others are different. if they know what the here or load command is and dont do it it's time for a little e training.all that i've done this to hunkered down and came in when i told them. It's a ruff way but it's better than waiting for them when your ready to go from now on.If i ever run out of the dogs i got I'll go straight back to jagds. However they aren't for everyone.

Your a lot nicer then me brother. Dog better hope it doesn't have a collar on of I can't catch it on foot. I have had some young dogs that were timid a little and just didn't like the truck and would lay down in the brush out of sight but the running away when you get close over and over and over pushes me over the edge. Mabe if I didn't treat them good and feed them great dog food I wouldn't mind but "don't bite the hand that feeds you" / dont piss off the boss man. CULL HARDER FELLAS:)
