Ok, so I am brand new to the forum here and only been hunting a couple of years with this being the first year of owning my own dogs.  Had 4-dogs cut on this good boar 3weeks ago and mine was one of those that got cut.  I knew he was kinda catchy when help arrived and he had been poked a couple of times before but he was unzipped on the shoulder this time.  Got him a bay vest now but I kinda want to hunt him this coming weekend but the cut is still open.

Can I some gauze over it with duct tape and then vest him and let him go or should I really leave him in the kennel and let it heal for the rest of this year?  The guy I hunt with said hunt him, he has all winter to heal.  I favor my dogs a little more than he does his.

We stapled him up but he pulled them out, gave him pennisilum(spelling???) for a week and put anti-biotic cream on it for a week and it is healing up faster than I thought.  He can lick it and is not favoring it at all, bouncing around and pawing with it.

Here are is a picture with my hand so you can get an idea of the size.

Pics like that just adds fuel to the anti hunting fire. Its bad enough folks post vids of cut dogs on youtube where there is no editing control. A descriptive size of the wound is good enough for most to understand the severity of the wound

I'd put him up till it heals...won't take all year...a month...maybe six weeks. I had a dog cut worse in his chest and with antibiotics and a spray (don't remember the name) he was totally healed in a month.

Lots of nasty stuff out in the woods and waters. Last thing you want is a serious infection.

The mods will have to take it off if they want. Can't do it yourself.

It looks like it was nothing more then a skin cut to begins with, maybe a touch more.  It'll heal fine in a few more weeks and he'll be fine.  I wouldn't hunt him with a vest, it'll run it to bad, but I don't mind hunting a cut dog.  If they're gonna be dumb on a bad hog, they'll learn to get tough.

Thanks BA-IV and KevinN.  It was just a skin cut with one puncture.  What happened was they where bayed on a 8ft deep 4ft wide ditch and the catch dogs couldn't hold the hog because everytime they caught the hog would slam them upside the wall and nock them loose.  It was tight quarters and my Slim dog apparently was too close when at the wrong time.  Thanks Again.

We've worked a cut dog in a pen for a few days in a row after he got cut. Hoping it was sore enough, we were Trying to teach him to get smart and back up!  He didn't. Some dogs just catch! There's a certain point where you can just tell its ok. It'll look good, you know what I mean? Use your judgement!
