If you only have a handful of hogs that are spread out over several thousand acres, what a hound, cur our some type of cross be best for finding a "needle in a haystack" in all that wooded terrain?

No matter the breed just make sure it will cast and run a track for hours.

If you have access to all that acreage then your options are unlimited. Your choice should depend on your preferred hunting style/available equipment.

If all you care about is catching hogs and can drive most of the place either in a truck or ATV and have a tracking system then I would think a very cold nose would be what you would want. Find a track/water hole....put them on it and wait, lol.

If that's not your style...any good dog would work...just have to put the effort in locating fairly fresh sign to drop them on.

a needle in a hay stack...a good hog dog will find a hog if a hog is in the woods...it will be a dog that will hunt with you but if you slow down the dog will make bigger loops...the dog has to have that inclination to look and to find that pig once it starts smelling hog sign...

but there are lots of dogs out there that you about have to put them on a hog before they can find one...

Something with a super cold nose, a lot of hunt and tons of bottom.

I don't know what you have to do to have a blood line but my dogs are mine if that counts for anything most dogs with good drive nose and game will do the job but really it's up to us the dog trainer to do all the work needed to guid the dogs cuz there the ones doing it. But thanks Bonnie and Clyde

jagds, plotts, mt currs ... these seem to have a cold nose, drive an bottom to show u hogs.. shop around an hunt with the dogs 2 time if its a top dog because a dog shows a hog once dose not mean it will on other areas u may hunt.. test run the dogs on your place not a honey hole because some one will take u too a place that's full of pigs that they know they will strike at!

I can road em some but most is done on foot. I had a birdbull that would put teeth on any size hog but never hunted outa my sight even in good sign. I got frustrated, sold her and been out of it for about two years. Hard to find curs in VA, might try to find a hound pup outa good cold nosed dogs

Cliffhanger...be careful what you wish for, there are some dogs that will roll out non stop for looong long ways...you will be hunting the dogs more than hog hunting...

over in VA there are some sure enough good mt curs for coon and squirrel hunting. Find a strain that is used for coon and you will probably be very happy with the dog...some hunt silent some are semi silent and a few are open on track, so make sure to ask...
never say what type a dog you are looking for because these peddlers will always have what you are looking for...  Grin make them tell you what they have...another thing, some mt curs are small and fiesty looking...go for the 50-60 pounders when grown that will have a decent length of ear to them...that is about how I would do it if it were me in VA...

well to sum up and answer you questions . MINE   lol   no but really it depends more on the method you plan to hunt . do you want to sit on the tailgate , drink beer and watch a garmin or hunt  .  but it takes nose , bottom and grit for any place you would hunt  .
