Recently obtained permission to use a 40 acre wooded pen to train dogs. Wondering if any of y'all use a large wooded pen to work younger dogs. What are your thoughts on it ? This pen is about 1/3 swamp and the rest pines and oaks.

I dont see a problem with it we start all our bear dogs in a 28 acre hog pen to get them running an baying then its off to the woods

Use a 10 acre one all the time. It a jungle, and works really well.

Works great. I've used one that's the same size as yours and you can make good dogs in them. They actually have to find, track and Bay them like in the woods.

I think they are great for training young dogs PLUS keeping all dogs in shape. I WISH I had access to a pen just I could go and run my hounds a couple nights a week. 40 is large. I would prefer a 10-20 acre pen, but certainly would not complain about 40 or larger.

I have one & they are great for getting young dogs started & keeping dogs fit. Your old dogs will learn to cheat in a pen so I dont run mine in one very often but for young dogs they cannot beat. Makes me wonder how I ever trained one before.lol
I would not put more then 2 hogs at the most in it. Too many hogs & they will clear all the underbrush out & you will be having sight races.

I don't plan to leave hogs in it. Put them into a holding pen when not training. Figure the pen won't "finish" them out but it should greatly accelerate their training. I can use the pen whenever the owner isn't using it.

From what I've saw, there probably 10 hogs or so in the 40 acre pen we go to and they live in there. They haven't rooted up the underbrush or anything at all. It's still THICK in there. It's all wooded except roads and trails cut thru it.
