I've got a domestic boar I've had for a little over a year. I haven't fed him out on that high protein stuff...just creep feed, and a bag of pig and sow every so often ... plus table scraps of course. I plan on slaughtering this winter. I've heard your suppose to finish them out on corn the last month or so. I've already started on the corn.

Guys that have raised pigs....What's the purpose of finishing on corn? Makes the meat better?

Have u barred him yet if not he's still going to taste good anyways .. I think finishing them off with corn just butters them up before killing.

Adds fat and cleans out there system. Folks always fed anything and everything to hogs. The corn feed out gets all that out and helps marble them.

Corn is not high in fat or protein. You would better off feeding him a high quality hog finisher.
I know all the old timers used to do it but you take the commercial hog farmers & if they dont make their own feed, they use a hog finisher feed.
My uncle used to use a combination of peanuts & corn that he ground it all together, shells & all for his hogs.

U are correct. Corn is not high in fat or protein. Corn is high in sugar and starch which is high carbohydrates. Pig finisher is also low fat. Most runs around 4%. It is high in carbohydrates. Both serve the same purpose of increasing carb intake which in turn produces fat in what eats it.

Also finisher is cheaper than corn historically due to it being made of by products instead of whole feeds.

I'd cut him first... use chopped corn instead of whole corn.

Chopped or cracked and they'll digest it far better...we've always finished hogs on corn and sometimes a steer.

x2...and soak it over night to make it more digestible...I would castrate him as well...

Castrate this late in the game?

Probably slaughter him in what....2 1/2 - 3 months.

Will it make that big a difference?

yes it will make a difference. 3 months is plenty of time to feed out after you cut him

Not arguing just trying to learn/understand. What will it do barring the hog for just a short time? I know over a long period they put on weight because they are running around chasing sows....just eating.

This Boar is all by his lonesomes now, in a 16X16 pen. He doesn't RUN anywhere, lol.

Testosterone? Maybe make the meat taste better?

it will take the "stink" out of the meat. he will also finish better, and have a better feed conversion. more meat, and "fattier" better marbled meat. he won't be as tough and dry.
