I just can't seem to get my hands on a good strike dog I've bought several that we're suppose to b but guess
I shoulda known better when they were as cheap as they were guess I'm just gonna have to save up the 1500 or so and hopefully get my hands on a good one I've got some good pups and I'm doing everything that I can to train them I just need a lead dog for them to run with after deer season I'll get me a strike dog I love this sport not looking for sympathy just venting I guess but I'm gonna hang in there

Everybody that's been doing this knows exactly what you mean. Show me someone who just overnight comes into a great dog first go round and I'll show you a dog that will go to waste one way or another. It takes a few years of getting it handed to you before you see how rare the good ones are. Don't think that buying high price is buying smart either. Plenty of great dogs still are acquired for much less than what you think but they're not on the internet classifieds. Like heavyhitter89 said, find the good hog hunters, treat them honest and keep at it. If you have pups that you are investing time in, maybe just hunt them with someone who has honest dogs with little to no major bad habits. If they got it in them, they will catch on quick. Stay with it and Good luck.

See if this thread helps you

Also you could try callin Mitch Kemmer, not sure where your at and how difficult it would be for you to make yard visits.

hope this link opens up...if it does look at the second page with the 3 dark puppies...I would rather buy 3 pups just like those for 2 hundred a piece than to buy a finished hog dog...my thinking is that no one sells their best...at least with puppies from a good line there is a chance that you will have one or 2 that will be impressive...you can see that the sire is a great looking dog as well as a top hunting dog (TACK)...

That's one thing that makes this a fun sport. It's hard to get a good " real hog dog" and when you own one good one you will want one better than that one and every dog is different in so many ways and that's what makes it difficult to get started. But if everybody had a good dog it wouldn't be any places to hunt someone else would be hunting the places. But you can find a dog somewhere forsale that you like but I see people a lot that go buy dogs and have no places to hunt them and that's just as or more important as having a good dog. Good luck getting started

I didn't look for top notch dogs when I got mine. I was just looking for dogs that were started. I ended up with some trashy rough dogs. Are they top notch today? Not really. They will find pigs but they do trash. I have spent a lot of time working with them knowing that more often than not I would probly come back empty handed. My dogs may not be the best but I spent the time getting to here with them and I will keep on till they die or otherwise become unable to run. I enjoy taking dogs that were give to me that were called no count and catch pigs in front of the guys that gave them to me. One things for sure can't nobody say I'm a store bought hog hunter. Lol.

When I first started in the sport I was told the most rewarding feeling is get a dog that is lightly started (in the pen) and just work with that dog I was almost to the point of buyin a finished dog but I never did and now that I look back 3 years later I wouldn't have changed a thing it takes a lot of time and patience and we still have the dog that we started with and she will outstrike my brothers finished dogs he bought 9 times out of 10 to me its the best feeling seeing a dog progress from nothing to a damn good dog I'm not saying she's the best but she gets it done I'm not in it for sellin the hogs I got into the sport because I like seeing the dogs progress and I like to see them work don't get me wrong catching hogs is fun but the best part for me is to see them dogs work and progress

an old man told me when i was a kid that you have a better chance of someone giving you a good dog than selling you one. 20 yrs later its still true. As much as it takes to make a good dog, nobody wants to sell their good dogs. I know i don't. If i had to stop hunting i would place my dogs with people that i know would hunt them and take care of them.

x2 on what you said...I always say buy 2 or 3 pups from a good line of dogs and train them and expose them to the game you want...if they have that natural ability and you set them up at the right times (quite a bit of training is timing and the right scenarios to turn them out on), then these pups can go on to be great dogs if they have it in them...because great dogs are not for sale...so might as well take the chance on well bred pups instead of buying a decent dog that will never be great...you can take that decent dog hunting every day and he will never improve...take those pups once or twice a week and they might just show you what a real hunting dog by the time they are one year of age...
