my female Catahoula that just had her first litter(13, but one was dead) yesterday is dripping thick black discharge?? is this normal? is it from the pup that died? she was dripping it last night after the first 8 pups and then this afternoon she had the other 5 but we don't know if the pup was a still-born or not. should I take her to the vet or is it just discharge from the last pup? please help!!

If its just old blood lookin thats comin out its most likley just discharge. Has she pissed since she had the pups? And always if you dont feel comfortable with it or dont feel right definatly go to vet!!

im assuming your referring to dripping from her cooter? is it black or really dark red? black blood is nothing more than blood with no oxygen left in the cells and its "dead" blood. my gyps would bleed dark, dark red, and lighten up after a couple days n bleed for another wk or so. give it a couple more days if its just really dark red, and not black. if it black, I would say take her in just to be on the safe side.

she has pissed today a couple times Charles I think it is just black but I will check to see if it is dark red tomorrow. I thought it probably is just the dark blood from the dead pup?

it is a good idea to all ways give your gyps a round of anti biotics like amoxicilan for a few days after whelping to avoid any infections . that's what I have all ways done . the gyps will discharge for several days after whelping .

With mine there is always a nasty black tar looking crap the first day or so after the pups. Honestly haven't payed attention to where it comes from. It's common with mine though.

I've had a lot of gyps drip that black stuff for a few days after whelping, and like half breed said, i always run a weeks worth of antibiotics thru them after they have a litter.

If she is eating her food, she is fine. I also do what Halfbreed does. A couple of days of antibiotics & no infection.
