it may sound disgusting, but poison ivy/oak/sumac are like bull nettle as far as itching and burning and hives. not sure if it will work, but I know from personally experience that with bull nettle and athletes feet, pissing on it will stop the burn n itch and get rid of it in a day, 2 at the most.

something I do is actually put as hot of water as you can on the area. It will actually stop the itching for hours. I usually do it before bed. Some docs say its good some say its bad but I get it a lot and ive never had a bad problem with doing it.

             http://www.rd.com/slideshows/poison-ivy-home-remedies/

Some home remedies he might want to try. If it's real bad he needs to go get a shot and be done
with it. Aint no sense suffering when a shot will clear it up in a day or two.

I do know that the oil from poison ivy does not wash off easily...and as long as it is stuck to you it will continue to cause problems...if you can get some acetone (finger nail polish remover) and pour some on a paper towel and scrub your skin with it to remove the oil it will help...you can also talk to a pharmacist and see what they recommend...

I hate poison ivy I get it every time when hunting in thick areas I us gloves and talk extra Cetirizine 10 mg and it helps keep the reaction from the oil.  I have cetirizine 20 mg pill from the doctor an its the same pill you get over the counter jusy less mg..

This has long been a remedy for bull nettles. John Basilone (medal of honor winner on Guadacanal in WW2) went bare footed and pissed on his feed to keep from getting jungle rot. He learned the trick from some local natives.
