ITS ALL IN YOUR HEAD!!!!!!!    Most will never admit it but this man is gonna trade off a great sounding dog because the people he's hunted with or around have pumped this "crap" in his ears since he started.  I have one question and I'd like an honest answer.  How many open mouth dogs have you followed and how long?   I had this same mentality for 15 years, if it made a peep it was gone!  Looking back, I got rid of some nice dogs.  I can't count the times I ran hogs all night with a dog not making a sound, just bay a few barks then break again all night.  Some hog just run and there's nothing we can do about it, no matter what our ego tells us.  Rough dogs, silent dogs, hounds, or curs there's no solution.  Yea I know..........   Sometimes this works and sometimes that works but don't waste your breathe on me I been doing this too long.   My suggestion is to keep the dog and learn to appreciate what she can do, and that is bay hogs

I believe the post says "looking for opinions"!!   That's mine and I stand FIRM by it!!!
X2

I would have to agree. I want a dog that hunts. A dog that will stay with a hog. As long as those points are filled wide open or silent don't matter. Heck I like a lil hound song from time to time.

I see both points but I have seen it happen where the open dog will pull the silent dogs of the track but if he can run track fast and don't come off an on I don't see the problem I don't like trains but I wouldn't get rid of a dog cuz a little yelping jmo

Exactly. I may not like a open dog period weather ive hunted for "15yrs plus" its jus my prefrence twards a silent dogs. Like i said before she is forsale. I have a good set of pups that i wont expose to her, cause she does bark on a broke hog. But its jus my prefrence in hintin style. Jus lookin for opions is all thanks!

We'll if your reasoning is that you will not hunt her with pups for fear of them opening like she does, then it makes sense to hunt her with silent dogs to make her shut up. (your thinking)lol

I would not shock her but you might try toneing her when she yips but I think you have the right idea already. Sell the dog because she does not suit your style of hunting. jmo

If a dog is opening after a hog has broke bay, there's nothing wrong with that at all! What u think the hog is just Gonna run 4 ft and say well I don't hear that silent dog I'm gonna stop and with an open dog it gonna keep running! Once that hog is running it's up to the dog stopping it! Now barking on trail before it gets to the hog, I personally am not a fan at all of that! I believe it gives u a little disadvantage as far as giving the hogs a early notice, and gives them the upper hand! Good luck with your dog I hope you figure out what's best

I always love a post where someone asks a specific question and most of the replies never address the man's question.

I don't think you should try a shock collar.  Ive seen too many people ruin or hurt dogs by using a shock collar; me included.  Shock collars have their place and they should be used and started in a controlled environment, such as a kennel when a dog is barking excessively.  Often it is not the collar that runis the dog as much as it is the inexperienced using the collar.

I think you can use a collar when:

First- the dog knows that a shock is being used because their behavior is not allowed and can the action be shocked (barking in a kennel) can be stopped.

Second- the purpose of the shock is directly applicable to e behavior that is not desired, such as running a deer or trash.

If you have a dog that is finding and chasing hogs and a little bark is the only hole in the dog, I would not shock the dog.  The dog is doing what they are suppose to do; the dog is most like excited and this is a natural behavior.  If you do decide to use the shock collar, I would start low and stay low and I lite this dog up.  You could stop a hunt cold and it may take longer to get the dog built back up .

Shocking your dog is only going to back her off the hog it is not going to make her silent you cant change that.
