So I was out supplementing Dixie's pups this morning. They're just over four weeks and gettin around pretty good. I had a few slipping out of the pen because I have one side that isn't puppy proof yet. I wasn't real concerned with it but I guess I should have been.
One little gyp pup slipped out and went down the backside about 40 feet...around a corner and made herself accessible to another gyp (Bella) with pups. Well Bella and Dixie don't get along but I sure as heck didn't think Bella would hurt a pup (even when she had pups of her own) Well she got ahold of her for about 2 seconds. Now the little pups head is all swelled up. Hope she didn't crack her skull...don't see any major puncture. Her cheeks awoke up on one side and it's puffy under the top of her head.
Too young for meds? I've got anti's (cephalexin, amoxicillin) some rymidyl, smz.

I didn't realize when you texted me the pup was only 4 weeks old i'm not sure at all on giving those meds to them. Will find out forsure and let you know.

I've seen a few pups that had the same thing happen to them and turned out fine.

It could be the brain swelling, Maybe! and I think the pup is to young for those anit's might need to take it to vet. I could be wrong though hopefully someone else chimes in!!!

Have it happen...I gave dex and injection of benadryl, head shrank back in a few hours.

I agree with Mr. Mike, a pup wondered to the wrong side of the yard while they were out explorin here at the house, well he put his nose in the wrong feed bowl and one of my males got him like you are talkin about Kevin, he had one small puncture wound on top of his head but it swelled up like an orange lol. I sprayed vetericyn on it a cpl times just to be safe and he was fine in a few days. |

U can give amoxycillin, ampicillin, i think even cephalaxin to pups that young. U have to open the capsule and mix it with water to get the right dose, look it up online for dosing in the merck veterinary manual

Do any of those help with swelling? There are no real punctures to speak of so....don't think infection is really a worry.

Dex does its a steriod...its never too early to give steriods.
