I'm not sure as to how old is necessary , but I would wait till at least 6 months so that the hide would be thick enough . young dogs are pretty thin skinned . but I would like to here what everybody else does . in fact I know a guy I talk to about leopard hounds that does it professionally and i'll ask him . he's in one of the Virginias so it might take a day to get a response  . but i'll get back when I hear .

Also remember the skin will stretch as they grow.  A friend of mine branded a younger pup and now her brand is nearly double the size of the rest of the dogs
