Hello ETHD. I am new to the sport of hog hunting. I did it a few times in high school but have never had the chance to have my own dogs. I have now moved from Houston to the country in Bryan/College Station. I have been following the fourm for a month or so and reading all that i can. Great information on here for a new guy. Ok enough of the interduction. I started to build a pack of dogs. I had a 11 month old mtn cur/ red bone cross given to me. He has seen a hog twice and will bay a bit then will run around then bay a bit more. I think he is just a little young still. The next dog i am calling a cat/pit cross that showed up at the house with no information on him. I asked around and no one knows him. So i showed him a hog with the red bone male. He flat out bayed his tail off for at least 20 min. He did not show any aggresion tord the red bone. Here is the problem. Now any time that i am with the red bone he wants to come off his chain to get to him. He was able to get off the other day and got ahold of the red bone as i was holding the red bone back . My wife come running out and took a hold of him and we were able to get him to let go. The funny thing is if i am not around he will not miss with the red bone. Just when i am around both of them. He even lets my jag pups bite him and jump on him and he will lie there without a problem. I can be around my other adult dogs all females and he will not show any aggression tord them. He is just fine. Question is keep him and only use him in the bay pin or Thanks in advance for any and all opinions.

I think you need to make him realize that you are alpha dog, maybe a little shock theraphy will cure him, sounds like a decent dog that just need the kinks worked out.

I would not keep a dog like that on my yard. I did at one time, and it cost me dearly.

I hadam old lab mix house pet that was alpha. My make dog was fine with that, but I took in a female that was fine with it got about three months. At three months there were problems. I separated the two females twice. The third time I want home. The old lab took a whooping and had to be put down. I ended up rehoming that dog. I wish I had done it at the first time or two of squabbing. It's a really tough call though, sucks getting rid of s good dog, but it also sucks to bury one.

how are they towards each other in the woods ? if I got rid of every dog that squabbled in and around the house , I'd be out of dogs lol . home turf and dogs set up a boundary and don't like others in their space . been my experience the woods were all ways neutral and everybody gets along .

Thanks for all the opinions guys. I have not been able to get them out in the woods but in the bay pen. Both were fine. The cat was all work and the red bone was a little work and a little running around. It seems that he will be fine around all the other dogs just that one males he doesnt like. I am going to try and see how he acts around a different male before i try to hunt him in the woods. I dont need him to hurt someone elses dog. Then i will be the new guy with that dog. I think maybe if he dont hunt well. Maybe he will make a pen dog and help make some money for the food bill. I just dont want anyone hurt before i get him straight. If he doesnt work out maybe he will have to be retired early. I am thinking that he ended up on my door step because someone was tired of dealing with him. I will update you guys in a couple of weeks after working with him. Again thanks for all the help.

I agree with Justin, he needs to know who is the Alpha (you) and you need to show him. Some dogs get the message quick some dogs dont. jmho

some male dogs get to thinking they own the place , or the truck , or horse trailer or the kids . they have to learn that I own ALL of it . then everybody is happy happy happy .
