We have started hunting some plott/bmc crosses and really like em. Who has some really nice silent plott dogs? Lots of hunt and good nose.

Plotts are not silent by nature and even though I've seen a few they are hard to find.  Why does it have to be a plott?  Curs and Catahoulas are silent.  They'll work just fine, if "silent" is so important!!!

If you are looking for one person that has multiple silent plots that reproduce silent plots- I don't think there is such a person or a family of such dogs.  As Oconee said, plots are not silent by nature and silence is not a characteristic that is bred into plots.  Is there one here or there - probably so.  My guess would be that if you found one, that dog was probably not silent their entire life.  I've seen older plots that learned to be quiet or learned to not put out so much mouth, but this learned behavior would not be passed genetically.

I have one that I really like the way he hunts. Oklahoma here. Great personality I just have never bred him. Plan on it but haven't yet. Been on his share of hogs too. He's almost totally black

Plotts are very hard to find 100% silent you can breed all you want for silent chances are 99% of them will open at some point. Doesn't matter if male is silent if the female isn't the same. If silent matters your better off crossing them with a cur of some kind if you breed full Plotts you are probably in for alot of disappointment

Mine is not really "rough" but bay's fairly tight and will sure enough grab some rear if the hog runs. He's out of white deer's happy streak and white deer's hardcore Harley. I've met dr. joe burkett and have been really impressed with his dogs. Smokey is my dogs name

As to the question of why work so hard to find a silent plott, here is what I'll say. I hunt mostly silent bmc dogs and a few mixed curs. The plotts are a good bit rangier than my curs, and also have a colder nose. That's why I look for some silent or mostly silent hounds. It's rare but when you find em they'll cover out further while your curs hunt closer in. For us it works well.

Also, it works for me to hunt them together because if the hounds bay up and it breaks I think the curs are a little faster sprinters... So a lot of times we can stay with a runner because we use both.

find you a good line of black with brindle trim cats and cross into a good line of plots...if you want to maintain good nose and good range use a parker cur cross with plot...

you have a better chance of getting quieter dogs that look a lot like a plot...

That's what I'm looking for also. And why I'm looking. Thanks!

This topic is pretty ironic to me!  I used to hunt curs only and had a hard time finding curs that would get out and hunt deep and had bottom to stay hooked!  The last few years I've hunted plotts and thats all changed but now I have to deal with open dogs!  Lol  Good curs are as hard to find as silent plotts!  I don't mind open dogs so I'll just stick with plotts!

I'd be pretty skeptical of any breeder producing a large percentage of silent plotts!  Just about anything you cross with a plott will throw brindle pups!
