I am concidering buying a young 1/2 grey hound 1/2 cat guy says she has found a few hogs just hopeing to hear frm someone who mayb has hunted them before . Thank you in advance!

I've hunted with a few dogs from greyhound mixes that could strike hogs. Kind of a crap shoot. Some looked like lanky lean cur type dogs with no nose and some looked just like greyhounds but could take tracks better than some of the colder nosed cur dogs I've seen. But being a sight hound, I wouldn't expect much nose generally from a greyhound cross.

no offense but i think you are looking at this dog the wrong way.look at it as a catahoula cross as this is where the nose and scent hunting will come from.not tryin to be rude just replying to a post.

I have a pup on the ground that is a Stag (Grey x Stag)  x Cat. It'll be a while before I can give insight as to how he turns out. Even then though, it'll be judgement based in one individual example of the cross.

I believe that a member here by the name of "aladatrot" or close to that name had one that was a pretty good dog from what I remember reading, they sadly lost the dog in a freak hunting accident from what I remember. I cant say ive seen em post on here in quite a while but maybe they will see this and respond.

the way I see it is like this...breeding sight hound with scent hound is more of a crap shoot...just like breeding a loose baying cur dog to a catch dog...breed gritty cur dog to catch dog if you are after rough...greyhound to pitbull if you are after speed and catch...

One thing to consider is will the dog even bark. I have seen some greyhound crosses that will find a hog and will catch without barking. You have to really be paying close attention to the gamin because without the dog barking there is no way for the other dogs to know it has a pig caught or be able to send a catch dog. Good luck either way.

Personally I wouldnt you will get thin skined dogs here and there.  Hard to find but go with a deer hound or wolf hound Suzuki or some of the hairy running dogs as they are tougher skinned dogs and most have at the vary least some nose maybe not a super star nose they are not just sight hounds.  I dont like most stags that you see for sale as most are a lot more grey than deer or wolf hound. Tthese are mostly corseing rejects.  If you could get in with a good yote dogger they would be ok but stay away from the track/corseing dogs. Asumeing my male 1/2 deer hound continues to impress me I will breed him to my ridgeback/pit and for most woods I think this will be the cross I will use.  Looks nicein theory anyways lol

stags are tougher and rougher than most greys. but i've owned some pretty tough hotbloods too.
i'd stay away from saluki blood if you want to cross into hog dog blood.
they are coyote acting and sensitive. they are also sensitive in the box and with other dogs. if they get bumped or wadded up in a corner by another dog moving or turning around they will fight. they don't like being crowded. they just have an overall odd personality to deal with on a daily basis.

The two Stags I have here, rough coated female and slick coated male, the male you can do any and everything to and he isn't phased, but my female will scream like you murdered her anytime she gets a toe stepped on, even when I grabbed her by the collar to walk her to untangle her chain, she started yippin. (I've never so much as LOOKED at her in a mean way, so this is just how she is I guess. I've never been rough with her ever.) The Greyhound blood runs strong in her lol. She's still very drivey, just sensitive I guess. She is young still too. Also, she tore a huge tear in her hock when she was younger on her dog house. Took FOREVER to close up. Grey skin I suppose. Go figure, when that happened, she didn't make a peep! I'll be crossing bull blood in down the road to help with that, for the hog dog stock. One thing you can't deny, these suckers are FAST.

Will you be breeding her to a bull terrier?  Im in NC I have a female stag out of Illinois from coyote stock that I plan to use on coyote rabbit fox any game she can catch lol but id be interested in trying to get a pup up my way if you breed them

Sure am! You can PM me with your contact info and I'll keep in touch. Not sure if any will be available but you never know, depends on how many she has. I have a good amount of hunters interested in the cross.

There was a guy around here a few years ago that had a 1/2 greyhound 1/2 pit.  It was the only dog he had & caught piles of big hogs with her solo. No bark , all catch & would relay as soon as you threw the hog.
