I had a buddy that went hunting with his two pit/cur dogs last night. They got on a group of hogs and killed a little one and told the dogs to go get another one. Well they waited till 3 in the a.m. and went home bc he had to work. Another buddy went back out there later that morning checking for them but no sign. I went this evening looking looking for them myself. My buddy and I were gonna go tonight but I just talked to him and he said that he talked to someone who heard that a guy shot two dogs with cut collars, his dogs. Both of which have his number and he did not get a call. He told me this guy does not have cattle rights on the place but only the hunting and that there are no cattle on the place, but even if there was these dog do not mess with them. He is younger than me and not sure what to do, and I do not really know what to do. But if that would have been my dogs I would be outraged. I know some of you could tell us what to do. Thanks for any help.

I can tell you from experience I had a problem with about 5 of my neighbors dogs on my ranch in Farmersville, TX. These dogs killed two of our Labs in two seperate incidents, and one morning I was looking out the front door and I had a colt tied to a post whos daddy was a World Champion out of a World Champion Daughter. I looked out in the pasture and these dogs had my colt down on the ground and I grabbed my rifle and killed 3 of them! I called the Sheriff he came out I told him what happened fully expecting to get some support from him and instead, I GOT ARRESTED! Charged with cruelty to animals. I was found not guilty in court because of 5 previous documented compliants. I will promise you that man will go to jail if you guys want to press charges! and he should go to jail

I think everyone needs to remember who all reads these forums and the things we post reflects on hog hunters as a whole.
Call the law and get them involved... it's a felony to just shoot a dog.

It is allways the best bet to contact the Sherrif's office in a case like this. There are laws on the books that are clear on when it is legal for a land owner or agent to kill a dog. The dog must be in the act of atacking or threatening livestock, or people.
We do have a problem now that feral hogs are classified as exotic livestock, a dog baying a hog could fall under that catagory because a feral hog belongs to who ever ownes the land the hog is standing on.

Me and few were hunting in Huntsville tx 2 yrs ago , my friend had 5 dogs,we seen the hog we were chasing,dogs cant read and pursued the hog on property next door 5 shots rang out, I called game warden friend pursued dogs, by the time he arrived at there camp game warden was present and had already coached his friends in what to say, made my friend carry alive dog back across fence ,warden brought dead dogs over and arrested friend for trespassing. all dogs were shot in back side, they tried to say dogs were attacking kid . As far as i was concerned and told game warden they would have shot my dog ill handle it . They did go to court on a civil case to get dog killer slash lucky man it wasnt my dogs . to pay for animals. My advise would be to file charges if possible for cruelty to animals. Its who you know not what you know. I personally hate dog killers or thieves . This thread brought back bad memories. Not saying game wardens are all bad along with law enforcement, but some wear there badge for the wrong reasons

I went through this about 6 months ago some POS shot my dog that had a hog bayed 5 feet from his fence line so he shot my dog drug him under the fence and threw him in a pond with a full grown gator. I found all this out after I tracked him to the pond and saw were he was drug there. Well we called the sheriff and needless to say they didn't want to hear me or let me show them exactly were they had him bayed and the blood trail under the fence boy I was pissed to say the least even though I was doing everthing by the book the law wasn't interested in my story only the man that was saying my dogs were attacking "his" wild hogs on his property. I sometimes wonder if I was someone other than a HOG HUNTER if this would have been treated different. I hate to say this but more than likely there will be nothing done in your friends favor.

I'm sorry to tell you this but you need to learn how to play the game. I'm sure that you are correct, the Sheriff didn't want to hear it. Maybe he didn't care, or he does not like dogs, or he was friends with the shooter. Does not matter. EVERYONE including the Sheriffs Deputy answers to someone (in addition to his wife) and at the top of that food chain is a DA who is bound to uphold the written law and a couple of elected officials with nice cush jobs which they are not going to risk on some lowly Sheriffs indiscretion.
Come to think of it, if you took pictures, and documented the crime scene yourself, it might not be too late to get a little action.

Do not give up. If you get to a point where you feel like a dead end, post back here and Ill tell you how to go over or around that persons head. Also, you might take the phone #s of the County Sheriff (not the office line or deputy's #, the elected official), the DA, your city councilmen, your state representatives AND THE LOCAL NEWS STATION. If the Sheriffs Deputy refuses to arrest and press charges, let him know who's phone #s you have and how you will use them. DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL YOU MAKE SOME REAL NOISE. If you are not happy with the results that you get from the deputy and elected officials, camp out at the persons front gate until the news crew arrives. DO NOT BLUFF, call the news crew. The Sheriff, along with assorted speakers and PR persons and maybe even the DA should be shortly behind them to clean up the mess.
Everyone listed, above the Sheriffs Deputy, is an elected official and the last thing they want is their districts corruption on the news. Especially for something like shooting and maiming and torturing a poor defenseless pet....... Play it up as an egregious act, the kind of emotional crap that PETA likes to play up, the kind of crap that incites outrage in average peoples hearts and tears in their eyes, the kind of stuff that news ratings are made of, and the kind of stuff that makes your elected officials quake in their boots!
You get the idea. Go gettum!

it is really hard to get a felony conviction on a dog shooting. This is because of the intent. shooting an animal is not meant to be torture. you mean to kill it. It falls on #6 on the law. basically you dont have the owner's permission to do bodily harm to their animal. It is almost impossible to prosecute someone that shot their own dog for the same reason. unless he lives through it an the owner does not seek veterinary care. I have been a cruelty investigator for 8 yrs and these cases are always disapointing in court. I would be glad to help anyone that needs it.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A GOOD STRIKE DOG I BOUGHT, IT WAS A UNDERAGE KID THAT SHOT HIM, AND THE COPS AND I BOTH KNOW THAT HE DID ITM BUT COULDN'T REALLY PROVE IT. HE WOULDN'T ADMIT TO IT, AND NOBODY SAW HIM, SO THERE WAS NOTHING THAT WE COULD DO. I HOPE YOUR BUDDY GETS SOME JUSTICE FOR THIS. BUT IF THE GUY DOESN'T ADMIT TO IT, OR NOONE SAW HIM THAT WILL COME FORWARD, ITS GOING TO BE HARD TO GO FURTHER WITH CHARGES. GOOD LUCK

Steve, I agree. Most of my cases are in civil court. I hit them in the pocket book. Many times, my goal is to just get them before the judge.

Good news...I found my buddies two dogs tonight while I was riding around in my truck! The guy did kill two dogs with cut collars on in the same area on the same night we lost these two dogs but they weren't our dogs that were killed. Thanks for everyone's help.
