So I have some young dogs (around a year old) that I started baying in a pen on a 50# hog. A couple are looser baying and a couple bay pretty tight. I was planning on staking a hog out and letting them track and find him today, but got busy so I figured it could wait until tomorrow. I took them out today in the woods to let them just get a little exercise and work their nose a little. My cur gyp acted like she was winding something and took off then dropped her nose with another dog right behind her. A couple minutes later I hear them baying (I figured a dillo) as we weren't in any sign. As I walked up on them the other 2 dogs showed up and I dang near crapped my pants. They were baying a big boar (200+). He broke and they ran him down about 800 yards and bayed a little longer. Then a couple tried to get catchy and got rolled up pretty good. The boar broke again but I was able to catch all the dogs and ease back to the truck. I don 't have any finished dogs, not even a catch dog yet. I am in the process of trying to either train one or buy one. My question is what should my next step be with these bay dogs. Still go ahead and stake some smaller hogs out a couple times or go ahead and get their confidence back up a little or hurry up and find/make a catch dog and start hunting? I know I made some mistakes today and will not make them again, but any opinions or insight to help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like They're ready to roll. If they didn't quit the hog after getting roughed up a bit.....lol.....Get a CD and go have some fun.

Put them in the woods with hogs they'll figure it out eventually. Like Kevin said get you a catch dog and feed them bay dogs hog tracks.

Thanks for the input. They were a little timid but worked their way closer just wanted to see what you guys on here think. It seems like they were looking to me for help but I wasn't sure how to help them. I am still green and wanted to tap into the wealth of knowledge on here so I don't screwup what I think are some young dogs that could be pretty decent.

Man im green too but I have been taken my dogs to the woods three time and last Monday they struck a hog .it was great man ive read a lot and people say just put them in the woods and they would figure it out or not. Well mine got it. Well instead of letting my dogs get jacked up on Monday i grabbed them and took them home. Yesterday I took my dogs to a pen let them get a look on a hog im very happy considering that one is five months old and the other one is his mom that was never started. I like to thank my buddies for all the advice.

I would start baiting some hogs up and start taking them dogs there. And if they bay one pretty quick make it break and let them run and bay that's good for young dogs
