Need to get all the information you can, police reports, shooter statement, witness statements if there are any, all that stuff. Hire an attorney with civil background in similar cases if you can find one in your area. Was the dog where he was supposed to be? If not, criminal charges will most likely not be filed. Unless you can prove malice, which will be tough. If criminal isn't going to happen, filing for damages is civil court is going to be about your only option.

  Anderson,
Hate to hear your misfortune. I know personally how you feel. Had the same thing happen to me several years ago. Hate to say it, but rather doubt law enforcement will help you at all. It will probably come down to who wants to spend the most money in court, then there is no guarantee. You also need to remember, how ever hard, don't do something to bring you down to their level. Like I said I know how it feels, 2 years later I still would like to get even.  The one thing that hasn't made any sense to me is the fact that everyone wants to bash someone who uses dogs, but not the ones that just want to shoot one because it is on his property?
