Well we went out this morning and had 2 finished dogs along with 3 puppies plus the catch dog. We headed over to a spot we had stumbled on one day squirrel hunting and it was far from a let down. 2 dogs go to hammering down hard about 300 yards away then I heard a third joining in on the action. Started walking towards the bay and walked across a herd of deer so I was a bit skeptical because I've had the same group of pups bump a deer before when out of nowhere my lead male dog comes out and I had seen some blood on one shoulder but it didn't look that bad so he ran back in there and we just see everything sitting back pretty hard which was quite unusual because we have caught bigger hogs than this one but something had just seemed strange so we get in there close enough to see and get the catch dog on him. After we got him all tied up, I start trying to find my male dog and what came next I don't think any of us were prepared for. I finally start to get closer to him and notice that he wasn't just nicked on that one side, on the other side he had some how managed to get cut down his side and had a small gash in between his ribs but it was just big enough to where his lung could pop out. That was the worst thing I could have ever imagined happening this morning, started calling around and no vet had an emergency number or atleast had one that was close enough. God sure was watching over us because luckily we found one of my grandpas old friends that could sew him up so we have him sewed up now an hes sitting in the back room. All we can do now is have patience and hope for the best. He's a fighter I just hope he can fight through this one

Sorry to hear about your dog. Hopefully he will not have to fight infection on top of the other issues. Good luck

muleskinner thats the only thing I'm worried about is that infection. I'm gonna try to give him 10cc's of penicilin and clean it out pretty good hopefully it works out. I wish the pictures weren't so big and I could upload em of the hog. He's probably a little taller than knee high but had some short sharp razors in his mouth.
BassCat he sure is when he was your he got cut on his back leg and had a big chunk of meat hanging off from when we were starting him and thats how he earned his name that he still lives up to, Scar

Keep him wrapped up and warm with his lung punctured he does not need to get pheunmonia with this cold weather. Keep him inside for while if u have too. He could really use a shot of dex if u can get some

We had the same thing happen the lung just popped out wasnt punctured. We put it back in sewed him up and took a siringe and pulled the air out between the ribs and the skin. They say that is very important but we gave him plenty of antibiotics and plenty of time to heal hes just fine now. Hope yours heals ok good luck.

I have seen what infection has done. It's hard to predict. I have seen dogs that looked like they would never make it pull thru and I have seen dogs look fine die over night. Keep him clean and give him the shots like you were saying. If you ever have a dog rip the gums around his top canine I would stop hunting immediately and get vaccinating. It's on borrowed time. How's your dog doing

His lung wasn't punctured but it was a hole between his ribs it kept coming out. We cleaned it out earlier and wrapped him up. He's been inside the house since yesterday after we got him sewed up with blankets and a heater on him and hes continuing to get better, still wagging his tail and we have to keep him from trying to walk around. Thanks for all your wishes and concerns
BassCat I'm over in Huntsville a little north of Houston

Sounds like the dogs did a heck of a job on a bad hog. I would get that dog on some Kaflex sp.? antibiotics. Anytime a dog is cut internally, you run major risk of infection. Also keep a eye, to make sure that air is not leaking from the chest cavity. That could cause a collasped lung. Good luck with him.

What'd they end up doing surgery for? Was something damaged internally?

The vet went in and put something back in place (I can't remember what he said it was but it was looked like a lung to me the first couple times I had seen it) and then had to pull the ribs back together
