so I would be alright with what I got just need to get a catch dog. My curs are 70-75lbs is there anything wrong with using a small catch dog rather then an 80 pound monster?

I am new to this too. What I have found out  is some guys can have one rcd that does it all and some run a lot of dogs. More than one way to skin a cat.

I am somewhat limited on how many dogs I can have... no more than 5 for me. Gotta figure out which route works better for you.
Seems like trial and error are the only way to do that.

Guys if I'm wrong please correct me because I am new as well.

Depends on your dogs, and how you like to hunt.  Ive got 5 dogs on my yard but I can take just two and find and catch hogs.  I run rough Fl curs and one will catch what it can handle, two will catch a grizzly.

Just a sure enough catch dog. Straight ear no head shaking or re gripping and your all set.

I agree with y'all on catchin hogs with 2 good dogs or even 1 dog but only having one or two dogs to hunt gonna cause you to miss out on some hunts. It ain't if they get cut down run Down or to sick for some reason to hunt its when. Of course lot depends on if your running same 2 dogs several days a week or just a weekend warrior

I rather have more catch then curs. If I was limited two solid catch and one sure nuff strikedog. I do not believe in giving a hog a chance. I rather have a dead hog then dead dogs.

excuse me for stating the bleeding obvious but. It depends how good they are.  Grin

I like having three.  Two working and one pup coming up the ranks.  If you can't catch pigs with your two main dogs.  Dig a hole. Get another pup.

One, good, medium range, rough cur dog, that will catch what it can handle, bay the rest, and help catch the others when the catchdog catches. One good pitbull CD that is smart, athletic, high prey drive, trap jawed! With those 2 dogs you can catch all the hogs you need.

Once you finish out the 2 dogs get a pup or young dog and start training him with your finished dog! if you are still enjoying yourself and are hunting alot work your pack up to 3-5 dogs. good luck!!

The LEAST amount of dogs is one.  There are several good curs, hounds, or crosses, that can find, bay and catch a hog.  They are not going to survive long catching rank boars ad barrs.  This leads to the second least number; you cannot consistently hunt one dog all the time and expect to catch the hog or a hog trip after trip.  I think three dogs is the lowest number of dogs one should have.  Three dogs allows you to have other dogs to stay up with big time running hogs or gives you additional dogs for when dog # 1 gets hurt.
