So every time I go to a new place to hunt they always look like they getting ready for Armageddon with all the guns and knives they toting. I don't know these people well and don't know how they gonna act when we go up to a bay with the pulling guns and slinging blades around me and my dogs. Last hunt ole dude brought a AR-15 with him. I know u know where I'm coming from. If anyone shoots a gun around the dogs it's gonna b me. I usually tell them that gun is only for your protection n a bad situation. No shooting around the dogs.  How do y'all handle it?  I mean it is their lease and they letting me hunt their place. But one dog cost  more than their yearly lease.

NEGATIVE. Not around my dogs, they may not mean much to anyone else but i like the hell out of all of them, if i didn't i wouldn't own em.

I'll tell ya something i have noticed over the years, the folks that im worried about  are the over excited eager new to the sport guys who are showin off the gun every chance they get before the hunt. the guys who have them in their bag next to rope, batteries, water and flashlight and never say a word about em being there don't bother me, they have them the same reason i do, just in case...... I take my pistol everytime i go hunting, 99% of the time no one else knows i have it, it stays in the buggy and it is a last resort for me, unless im hunting alone i don't even tote it to the bay. Ifthat makes any sense lol.

I can't tell a man he can't protect himself. I can tell him I am the only one to shoot near dogs. I can tell him before we leave camp if he shoots anyone of my dogs it will cost 6 grand signed by him. At that point he has something to lose. If he don't sign I can load up and go home.

I dont hunt with a lot of new people never have really cared about it myself.  But if I did and they were all carrying guns I would imagine I would not even let a dog loose.  I got buddys now I have known for years that all want to go but carry big rifles and I just have to find some reason not to go .  I have mention it to them that those rifles are just to big and you cannot shoot those things around my dogs because they would leave the country and besides if any shooting gonna be done its by me and only two other guys I turst with it and that is Cory and Kyle anybody else I just leave my dogs in the truck.  Ole Tom Graham was one of the best shots I ever seen in my life around dogs hell he taught me really  and if he was here he would be one other but thats about it.  Its just not worth one of my dogs lives and I would really really feel like crap if it happened !

I carry a pistol during the daytime n if by myself at night i have a rifle too. If i dont know them, no shooting at all unless its for protection only. The pustol is barely visible n stays in my load vest. If im told no firearms, it goes in the tck n doesnt come out till the hunt is over n im headin home.

Now with it being their lease, ask them not to shoot near the dogs or anywhere in the general direction of the dogs and deffinately no shooting if the target can NOT b clearly identified. The crappy part about ur situation is, ur the guest. All u can do is ask them not pull it or even bring it, but in the end, its ur ultimate decision to turn or not turn the dogs loose if they choose not to ablige ur requst of no guns. All u can do is ask, u wont know their answer if u dont ask.

In all the years I have hunted I never have carried a gun or allowed anyone else to carry one. I have had a buddy get his best dog shot thru the back hip from a hunter carrying a gun for protection only and I was on a hunt where I guy got excited and stabbed a friend thru the hand. I just let them now there will b no guns and not to stab one until I tell them.

I usually start with a safety meeting especially with new hunters.  They are told not to do anything until we know the beast has been caught.  They are also informed that no guns are allowed unless they are willing to pay 5k for shooting a dog.  This pre-meeting usually gets the message across.   Communication is big with me especially when dealing with rookies.

All guns are left at the vehicle with me. All my dogs are gun shy anyway they never have been shot over but I have been hunting around some houses before and people shoot in their yard and my old dog will be straight line out of there and I have to run him down. It's no way id let strangers shoot over my dogs only a select few people if it came down to that

I think its funny when new guys ask me what kind of gun do I
bring? You don't bring sh!+ around me or my my dogs, stay in your
stand with a gun.!!! That's just asking for trouble unless that's how
how people hunt bay and shot, and the only one shooting is me
if I have to.
My best gun is a dogo named Diago.

All guns are left at the truck or we ain't going! Have had to tell several people they could not take a gun. I carry an extra knife and offer it to them if we decide to kill one!! No amount of money can replace your best dog period!!!

Got a questino for the guys that don't bring a gun. Are you saying you have a gun in the truck or you just don't bring one period? Im not judging in any way, what you do is your decision, same goes for me, I just can't see going to the woods with the intent of catching an animal that can literally beat a dog to a pulp and beat grown man down  ( I know its not a common occurrance but still...) without a gun of some sort at least at the truck. Im not even gonna get started on some of the wierdo's i've run into while hunting that weren't supposed to be on the property I was on. Like I said not trying to start anything but for me, my gun is like having a 4x4 truck........I may not need it and I may not ever use it but its there, just in case......I may be too paranoid lol but with exception to work (chemical plant) I carry a gun almost as much as I carry my wallet/phone...... I like the re-assurance that if it hits the fan I have something to help my crippled ass  Grin

I'm on the same page. I always have my pistol on me, it's habit. Do I plan on using it? No. But you never know what might happen.

Justin and Krystale, I totally agree.

It wasn't smart but I use to go all the time without a gun or a knife, just tie rope. Just me and my younger brother caught a big boar one night in a deep ditch that was almost waist deep and the bank was straight up on both sides. As soon as I got in to grab the hog I was stuck in mud and couldn't do anything but hold on and pray. Its a long story so I'll spare the details, but it was about as nervous as I had ever been, and I learned right quick that I had better start carrying a knife whether I planned on tying everything or not. I sure was wishing I had one that night. I ended up losing both of my boots, my light died, and had to turn the hog loose to get out. It was a hairy situation. That hog taught me a lesson that night and since then I've always kept a pocket knife on me, extra batteries, and a pistol in the truck.

Look at it this way. "You would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it."

LAhogger, we all know where you coming from but you say it is their lease! As Charles
mentioned, in this situation you can choose to not put dogs on the ground  or try an explain
it all to them and get them to see things  your way.

I'm saying I don't carry one period. Once the farmers know that you don't carry a gun it works to your benefit in some cases. There will be jealous deer hunters and other hunters who will tell landowners that You know when they are out there hog hunting that they will shoot big deer if they see them. Then the easiest way to make sure you don't is to stop the hog hunting. Then there are also farmers concerned about their cows. If you don't carry a gun it's hard to blame you. I'm not saying all deer hunters are like that either I just know that people get jealous when you are hunting and they are not.
