went to a stocker cattle conference this week and 1 of the speakers said by 2017 you will no longer be able to get antibiotics over the shelf . you will have to have a prescription from a vet . which means you'll have to go to the vet if a calf needs 5 cc's of exede !
have ya'll heard this ?

I read an article about making it illegal for farmers and ranchers to use antibiotics to make animals grow bigger. And that drug makers were changing their labels on how a drug can be used. I knew they're pushing requiring that licensed veterinarians supervise the use of antibiotics, but did not know there was a date set for when its going to happen.

I have heard this, but there will be ways around it. But as a rule antibiotics have been over used by uneducated producers. Most of the high powered drugs we use need a script all ready, we order and the vet rights the scrip. No problem.
Now the problem will be when DVM's are required to GIVE the antibiotic injections. Be kinda tough to call the vet for every yearling I rope to give it a shot.

They're already making it harder to buy over the counter. Several popular aintibiotics have already been taken out of feed stores and labeled as "script only". A livestock drug rep told me that by 2017 even pennacillon (sp) will have to be bought through a vet.

jdt, I don't think that the larger ranches/operations will have any trouble getting the meds they need to take care of their sick animals. I run my own cattle and also work for a ranch that runs a lot of cows and yearlings. We have close/good communication with our DVM. All of our scrip products come out of a supplier that shares his clinic. We need some scrip meds, no problem, I can call from horseback while doctoring cattle and order what I need, scrip will be written and medicine delivered to me with in a few hours.
Who will have trouble under these new laws are the small producers who do not have a DVM they work with on a regular basis. Hunters aslo might have some problems if they are just buying from a store and don't have a good working relationship with a DVM. Build those relationships now if you don't have them all ready.

yeah it's still workin here , if we have to we come back with draxxin and or baytrill .
my main concern is yours , yes i can get a script from my vet for 1000 x's what i need right now ... but what if the day comes when the old vets that had some common sense retire and junior that grew up in town and has numerous colledge degrees thinks he has to go by the book ?
he's not gonna give a dam about our cattle , he'll be more worried about the little old ladies cat .
what are we gonna do ?

I figured these days were coming...
1. folks using meds incorrectly...maybe, but a good argument...
2. too many folks are now bypassing the vet because all is on the net on how to doctor a dog, cat, etc...what took me a good while to learn through common sense and thru a few other hunters/dogmen one can learn pretty quick as can be done on this site...I have learned from here as well...but a person that gets into dogging can learn all he needs in a short time and as a result the vets are not making the money...so the main issue is "MONEY"...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

my question is this - yes we can still get what we need now , their are ways around it . but they got this law passed before i heard about it . what if they pass more laws to where the vet has to come give the shot like silverton said ? what does a farm call cost ? can you afford to pay it every time something needs a shot ? i can't .
it sounds crazy to say it might come to that but if i had told my granddaddy 20 years ago what we would be dealing with in 2014 ............
he'd have said " that won't never happen " .
everybody needs to educate themselves and vote conscoiusly and not be smoking dope or thinking about smoking more dope when they do !
