Fixing to buy a astro 320 wanting to know what is the difference in the collars 30 40 and 50 I'm assuming the 50's are better but can someone tell me why do the pickup further or is it just a bark indicater I see alot of people selling the 30's wondering what the reason is

In a couple months when they run out of dc 30 parts you will be stuck with a dead collar if it breaks Bc they are my purchasing any more parts to repair the old ones. I have the 50s and I've had the 40s and 30s and in the pine thickets I can get up to 2 miles out of mine! There great I also have some 40s and there good to but I prefer the 50s

I hunt in alot of pine thickets also I have a buddy with the alpha it starts having problems at around .75 I haven't been around the Astros that much but talking to people they pickup further than that I've always used my beep system I can find my dogs further with it but its just such a hassle compared to the garmins time to upgrade I guess I'm finally getting outdated

Keep your beep beep system and get some 40 or 50s either will work. But defiantly keep beep beep for back up

Tell your buddy to update his handheld and collars if he's having trouble with his alpha.

If your buddy's alpha is having problems at that rang, something is wrong try updating the unit and collars. the alpha is the best of the best hands down, distance and performance.  look at it like this....

astro 220 was the best first.
then the 320 came out and was evan better. and the 320 is compatible with all the same collars. 30's  40's and 50's.
now theres the alpha and it is the best by far. kinda a all in one. but these collars wont work with it you need the new collars TT10

the collars are the same way 30's were first and the best at that time. then the 40's came out they were evan better, then the 50's came out and they were the best.

now with the new alpha and TT10 collars, don't look for any new collars for the Astros like 60's or 70's because the new technology  will all be for the alpha, yes garmin is phasing out the Astros and the collars 30 40 and 50.

with this being said buy the best that you can afford.  and at this time the best system is the alpha (hints the price)

hope this helps . and for the record this is just my opinion!!!!!!!!

30 and 40 use waas correction. Free government satellites same as airplane use for autopilot. 11 satellites is the best it can get average 9 at a time.

50 uses waas and GLONASS. GLONASS is satellites owned by the Russian government. That brings an additional 11 satellites into view giving a total of 22 SAts with average tracking being 16. The 50 also moved the sat reciever back to top of collar giving better GPS reception. Same as 30's.

Now to units.

220 can track a 30 or 40. Great unit but outdated.

320 can track 30, 40, and 50. Also offer birds eye map which is real nice having Ariel view maps like google earth. Also a great unit. Not exactly outdated yet but with electronics that could happen tomorrow.

The limiting factor of both units when it comes to range is the radio signal. If ur unit can't get info from collar all the satellites are useless. Long range antennas are the best investment u can make for ur tracking system. Both on the collar and handheld. I use the long factory supplied antenna on my handheld and long range ones on my collars. I also have an extendable antenna I can use on the handheld. It makes a huge difference in tough conditions. I would like the cb style mounted antenna. It gives u a larger ground plane increasing the receiving effectiveness of ur hand held. This with long range antennas would give u the best communication between handheld and collar.

I have never laid hands on an alpha so can't give any input on it.

All that trail barking is probably frying the bark indicator and messing up the collars.  Grin

50's get more range for me period!
I got .89 miles with a dc40 (long range antennas on both console and collar) and 1.94 miles out of my DC 50.
That sold me !!!
