I run closed mouth dogs, always have. I recently bought a semi open dog, he found a hog this morning, just don't know if I can get used to it. Seems like he would be pushing the hogs?  Opinions?

I'm thinking of running a pointer. As long as he shows treed on my garmin I'll know he's looking at a hog. Probably wouldn't ever have a race if a dog would find a hog and never bark at it, just point.  Grin

Your just down the road from me but theres not a.hog that doesn't run these days so its up to you. As long as the dog is fast on the track or will stay hooked why does it matter.Every body is.different and has there opinions

There are a lot of threads about this already- I suggest reading through a couple of them.

Some main topics of the thread were:

Open dogs can push a hog and make one run more, but the good open mouth dogs still get the job done.

Some hogs will run regardless of the dogs being open or closed and once the hog breaks, they will run no matter what.

Other environmental factors such as hunting sounds (talking, tailgates, 4 wheelers) may also make a hog run before dogs ever put on the ground- and its possible to make noise and still walk up on a bedded hog.

That's BS!!  I've had both open and closed and have never heard of that I've seen hogs found and bayed as well as run and stopped by both opened and closed dogs

I don't agree with that....he found the hog and was baying until we turned the bulldog loose. What are you referring to?

"never".....really?

This is either ignorance or you just haven't hunted behind a good open dog or dogs.

Cheesy  You tell em Peaches!!!!!!    Grin

If someones excuse as to why a dog didnt bay a hog is because it was open on track, then most likely the dog wouldnt be worth a crap even if he was silent...
