An old dogman named George called me a few months back and had his neighbor's son he wanted to get involved in the outdoors and wanted to take him on a hog hunt. George used to run hounds up in Utah on bear and mountain lion. He had the land lined up " loaded" with hogs way out on the other side of Waller County. Matt and I went out there this evening and made a quick hunt before dark.

I'll let Matt tell the story cause I gotta get to bed and head to the hill country in the morning for a few days of R & R. We ended up with two sows... I only got one pic of the smaller one before we headed to the next bay. Here's Matt and Travis... y'all have a good weekend and a Happy Easter!

This hunt a lot of excitement for any hunt especially the young mans first hunt.  The place we were hunting was fairly open with wesatch (sp?) and mesquite in the pasture but had a heavily wooded creek running down the middle of the land.  We drove to the far end of the creek and turned to come back with the wind in our favor.  We were getting a little concerned because we had not seen much in the way of tracks or rooting at all.  About halfway back to the trucks we heard Smiley open up on the other side of the creek and soon all the dogs were there and baying.  As we were unloading the bulldogs we heard a hog squeal and figured they had cought a small shoat.  Soon the squealing stopped and the dogs were bayed a little deeper this time and we could hear a good ralley going on.  We walk to the creek and cross it and notice they are bayed solid in a big rose hedge thicket.  We cut the bulldogs loose and upon impact just hear grunting so we know it is good hog.  I was the first to arrive on the scene and notice a little trail going up in the rose hedge so I go running up in there only to find the dogs cought on a 180-190# sow with two MONSTER hogs standing shoulder to shoulder with the cought hog whooping the dogs.....I came out of the thicket real quick Grin.  We hollared at the hogs and they ran about 50 yards and stopped.  Mike ran in and legged the cought hog and Travis was able to get his first stick.  Before that hog was even stuck the dogs were baying the hogs that had run a short distance so we sent the bulldogs to them but they broke right bgefore the bulldogs hit.  There was a black and white paint hog in there that was an absolute monster!  The dogs were able to single the hog pictured and we were able to catch it in a few short minutes and Travis was able to get his second stick in about 15 minutes.  All of the curs were gone as soon as the hog was under control so we walked the bulldogs to the creek, watered them and came back to take some pictures and before we could get a picture of the first hog we could hear baying in the distance.   We went to em and as soon as we were getting close you could smell boar hog.  They had him bayed in a grape vine thicket right on the edge of the creek and we could see right away he was a GOOD hog with a real athletic build 250lbs+.  We cut the bulldogs loose again and for some reason they different trail to get to the hog then what we had intended and I think the hog knew they were coming.  As soon as Clifford hit that hog spun hard and left for God's country.  After collecting the dogs back up we could tell he was scrapper, Clifford was cut on the side of the face, blue was cut in the back leg and Chunk was cut pretty good in the flank.  Nice hunt with some whopper hogs, needless to say we will be taking the land owner up on his open invitation to return.

Matt and Mike,

Y'all are getting pretty good at performing under pressure.  Having a first timer AND the landowner present, and the dogs performing like they did. Hard to beat that kind of showing.

Cool Hunt! I can't believe those hogs came back and tried to whip the dogs. I'm sure Blue and Chunk will locate them next time and take out some frustration. :O)  Glad all is well other than some flesh wounds and Mike having to leave town to recuperate.

Yeah Sean you missed some good footage.....not of the bay though, just the look on my face when I came sprinting out of that rose hedge thicket  Grin.  It is rare to see hogs that will stand together like that and I was not expecting to find that when I rounded that corner for sure.  Had they been a lot smaller I may have been able to grab one but that was not the case,  at less then ten feet away they were not scared of me at all.  Images like that get stuck in your head for a good while.  I know that the paint hog was pushing the 275lbs+ range and had a bad attitude.
