I have a 1/2 Dane 1/2 pit. Bred him to 3 different females of various crosses. Oldest dogs are finding and catching. I have 2 out of that litter that are around 70lbs.

3 good cur dogs or one as hairy holder said. I run ruff to full catch cur dogs and would not change. Protect them the best you can but allow movement.

I like cur/pit crosses.  I've hunted with some fine bird/bull crosses too.  No bark all bite

leggy pit and plott

leggy pit and large mt cur

just keep the leggy pups and run all the dogs with a vest...

these dogs will hunt and range and most won't bark and that can be a problem...but with a gps tracker it should be very helpful...

running 4 or 5 catchy strike dogs that have about a 1/4 pit make pretty good dogs as well...that is my favorite style of hog dogging...

Speed kills.  I like my AB/Stag crosses.  They've got speed, agility and plenty of fight.

Hairy is right. Sometimes the half is not enough for a true catch on a big boar, but I guarantee you run them as a pair and you won't have that problem.

I bred them down to 1/4 stag now. They're only 5 months old, but I'm pretty sure they're gonna work.

Good luck.

Jag tank,
The cross you suggested is pretty popular in Hawaii, terrain varies, but most of the times I've experienced your dogs will stop the pig in some rough brushy areas. I don't recall seeing a lot of really large/ leggy dogs.

Common crosses over there I've seen: whippet/bull/Airedale/ridgeback/heeler/catahoula/BMC/greyhound. In any configuration, just never know.

running walker x pit

july x pit

and then choose pups wisely...

to me it makes sense to breed a hunting dog that uses its nose in the mix...creating a running catchy dog that has plenty of hunt and stopping power...

I decide to wait and try and buy a cd from somewhere I've been raising pups for a couple years now and I got three puppys  and three year old pups now. I lost my main dog two years ago. so i decided to rebuild my packi keep getting pups and trying new dogs but I decided last week that i am messing up my better ones by trading out so much. so i'm going to find a started cd from someone with a good one or just find a couple really ruff me too dogs. I had a couple in my old pack but didnt want dogs under foot with pups. I thought they might get the wrong idea or something.I hate buying a grown dog because they always suck or at least have some baggage. I dont sell junk dogs and like dogs so i always dread having to deal with a bad one. I would like to try some of those crosses but I'm going to get these pups working more like a pack first. I just have to many young dogs. I had to give away a couple real decent ones because I just couldnt keep them all hunting. One of them will flat burn a track. (I seen a time or two i would have paid serious cash for a pup like this) but none of mine are real gritty. so i guess I need to add some grit or a reliable catch dog. that catches every time and dont fight every dog it sees. I'll just have to wait to breed until I get these pups lined out better. If any of you breed something in the future like these crosses mentioned don't forget me.

Jag just wanted to say on the part where u said somethn abt a catchdog tryn to jump on every dog it sees.   I wouldnt have one like that. Guess ive been lucky with them all the ones ive kept would not fight another dog unless they were jumped on first. With that being said i have had plenty of currs full of piss and vinegar that liked to jump on the bulldogs. They got shock therapy and prob cured 95% of the time. The other 5% occured when one got loose at house when i wasnt home and well they were also cured

my problems with the bull dogs/pits I've had are, not wanting to catch at all, re gripping,  inconsistent catch,(which is very very irritating) charging in on hog then stopping short before catching which spooks the hog and gives it a chance to get its sprint on.the ones that i've picked up that would catch were either dog aggressive due to poor raising or people aggressive. I've tried about ten different ones in two years that didn't work out at all. my buddy has one that almost always does the job but He let go of a really bad boar and heeled beside us and got my dogs cut pretty severely one time. I may be picky but i had a cur cat cross at first and i haven't even found one as good as her yet and she wouldn't always catch right off.she gaged hog first and almost sneaked in to a yard or so then nailed ear like lightning.i am interested in around thirty or forty lb game bred dog with some leg on it but i dont want no human aggressive dog. If it gets loose i don't want my kids mauled.I also would like to think i could find one with some handle to it.I've hunted with dogs like this that are straight catch every time but i cant seem to get one. Maybe a dog like i want isn't out there but i want all that plus i want to have to use a break stick to remove it from a hog not just use one but need one or a knife to remove the ear!). I saw a blue tick that caught so hard I broke break stick trying to pry him off his eyes were bulging he was gripped so hard it took three of us to get him off and a big boar at that.surely there a bulldog like this out there or some dog. I think some one will read this and know what the problem is i'm not apposed to constructive criticism. Im just getting sick of seeing hogs bayed and loosing them. i see it taking some of the bottom out of good strike dogs.I don't like it at all.

Do u want a dog that finds and catches its own hogs or a dog that runs with the bay's dogs and catches what they find ?

i'm not set either way but rcd is what i want.If i had my choice it would be a tall lean lighting fast dog that locks down on an ear. but i'de be ok with a lead in as long as it is solid. my main dislike with a lead in is i walk hunt and it gets old leading one all day.If it hunts too it's ok. .................................. to the other question The first few pits i got were whatever i could get off graigs list. everyone says they all usually catch.... they don't! then a more experienced guy told me not to mess with them unless they are under two.I have had no luck there either but the youngest I have had was about 1.33 yr or so I have a american bulldog puppy right now that will likley do the job they are bred from those iron dog competition dogs and very high dollar but this was given to me to prove out gameness as a catch dog. this is the first prospective cd puppy i've had. she is a very laid back dog and loves to use her bite. I can see pups are the way to go but I only have loose dogs right now so I'm forced to take someone with a cd or take a gun. I need to get a dog ready to go soon or I'm not going to be able to solo hunt this fall and thats really what i like. my goals have changed since i posted at first because cold weather is getting close and i just need a good cd ready to go for now.

Man i have bad luck with some about like everyone else on here im sure. But my thnkn is i usually find  em  on here or local ppl giving them away. Ive never paid much of anything if i had to for em usually too many ppl just tryn to give them away. But i take one put him/her on a pig n pen and see if they naturally go for the head area. They usually always end up on ear unless really small hog. If they do not i dnt even give em a second chance. Now the next part is getn them to learn what a bay is. Its a lil harder now days because hogs break soo much. I used to just walk em n and when they seen the hog they would go catch and usually go to the next bay after that.  Or if they would go behind a cd already going to bays and catch. Its not really much to it to get a pit started if he/she loves a hog. Now if they r dog aggresive a lil shock therapy should work if not... gone! Ive been lucky not to run into any ppl aggresive  pits. Now the hard part to me with these free pits usually with one thats rather hyper is putn a good handle on em. I cant stand yapping on the bike or pulln me thru the woods. With a lil time a good switch or shock therapy works for this too. I would suggest just going thru some and find what works for u or if uve run out of patience and want to drop some change make the person show u the dog catch in the woods first! If i were to ever sell a cd i wouldnt mind doing that. Just wanted to share short version of some of my cd exp or 2cents Wink
