Just curious if anyone has had this happen. yesterday evening we went out to a thicket place we had not been to in awhile. We dropped the dogs at the gate and less then 50 yards in they had a big boar bayed. We released the catch dogs and just as we did the boar broke. A buddy of mine and i were running through the brush and we see something pretty crazy. The big boar leading the way, bay dogs chasing him, catch dogs chasing them and sure enough a boar javelina on there tail. Catch dogs turned and took on the javelina. Bay dogs then turned off the boar once the screaming started. I wish i had video or even pictures, but it was a big cluster. I plan to go back and get the javelina skull. it had 3 to 4 inch teeth on top and bottom. One of the catch dogs got messed up pretty good on the face and 4 of the bay dogs got "bit" on the legs and front shoulder. The one that got bite on the front shoulder went through and through on top and bottom. All bay dogs are trash broke and clearly wanted nothing to do with the javelina until the screaming started. Have any of ya'll have heard of them nasty things chasing after a bay? I know this sounds crazy, but you can't make this up. Those things are mean littler guys and really did on number on the dogs. i guess it's a good thing they bite and don't slash with them long teeth.

That is crazy. I actually had a buddy who bumped a javelina in the brush going to a bay and he ended up killing it with one those big mag-lites... holds like 6 D batteries. The dogs just got caught up in the moment. Javalinas are like trash to a strike dog and shouldn't mess with them under normal conditions.

Have had it happen on numerous occasions. I don't really know why but they are attracted to the dogs baying especially if a hog is squelling. They must think it is a javalina in distress. Couple of years ago they some of us in a tree and I jumped on a stump. Stopped his first charge with a boot to the top of his head but I backed away really quick like.
Take care of those dogs those cuts get infected easily.

Javi's are bad news for a dog. The thing that surprises me is that more Javi's didn't join the fight. Javi's have two things going for them hogs do not. First a javi can jump a 360* and I have seen on video Javi's that jumped and bit an arrow in half when shot with a bow. They are not like a hog that can only move his head a little. If your dog grabs one on the flank he is going to get a face full of Javi. The second thing is Javi's will usualy come from long distances to help out another Javi. They gang up on your dog and are every bit if not more agile than your dog, with bigger teeth that they bite with. The realy bad thing is they are ilegal to catch with a dog same as a deer. They are a game animal and do have seasons and limits. Where I hunt the season is Oct-1 to Feb-28

be careful, if you saw one, within a year there will be 50, and they gang fight like crazy. They will gang up on animals fast. They will chase baby fawns and kill them if given the chance.
Good news is they are fairly dumb. They will generally walk in line with eachother if they are going somewhere, and if you kill the first, the rest will follow in suit generally. You can go through a box of shells real fast. Went through two boxes of 270 (I guess technically .277) within 30 minutes on a ranch that I used to hunt in Mexico. All of them in the same group, filing in one behind the other to a feeder. Vulchers where there for a week.

This place is actually my family deer land, and i thought i had killed them all out of there, but i guess not. I have heard stories of people being stuck in trees all night long with javy's at the trunk just waiting.

but it was a big cluster. That's the only way to describe a Javelina/Hog Dog encounter If you hunt down here it's part of it, you trash break your dogs when you can of it but the bad thing is they're so close in smell and shape to a Hog it's hard to get the right environment to trash break your dog. My buddies Gyp that's really seasoned and will actually tell you when there is cows or Javelinas at the front because she will run to the back of the truck and wait for them to pass then get back out and hunt.

Where do you hunt? Down here in South Texas they are pretty common. I have seen about 30 in a pack before. I have gotten one catch dog killed by them. I have noticed even a small poke form one will swell up bigger that a deep cut from a hog.

very true. they bite down and rip here is a video of some that I shot a few years back while deer hunting. There is a decent little buck that comes out at the end and just stares at me and the javi's, just trying to figure out what is going on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLt38AKwLnE&feature=PlayList&p=37DEA9ADE077FF76&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=11

Never been in any myself. All of the stories I hear of them and dogs are NOT GOOD though. Just think if there was more than one.
