9-10-09 I started the weekend off thursday with a hunt on the Colorado River west of Lometa. One of the Jagds had got in a trap with a little boar and we decided to let him out...to bay and get some practice for my young catch dog. He shot outta the trap and didnt look back. About mile later he dumped the dogs off on a sow. Didn't get any good action shots but ended with a shoat and 100 lb sow. Friday 9-11-09 I met Steve (Monteria) down in Kyle for an early hunt. It was pouring down rain when I left Lampasas at 5:00 am. He called and said no rain his way. My catch dog was a little beat up so Steve was to bring his catch and I was bringing an 8 month old pit...never been in the woods. About half way to the ranch Steve calls and tells me he forgot his catch dog. haha.. He said we can bay and shoot or thought we had enough grit to catch. He must of forgot I have 20 lb dogs. We pull in the gate, kick the dogs out and 2 minutes later we are bayed and caught. Guess he was right! My pup realizes there is something going on and goes to bay about 30 yards away and catches an ear..of an already caught hog) It had rained a few hours earlier so we decided to drive roads and kick the dogs out on tracks and cast the dogs a few other times. No luck. Steve's and dog. Making our way back to the truck we finally had the dogs roll out about 700 yards but came back in. We drove around to the general area and kicked all the dogs back out. My Jagd, Luke, rolled out straight off the ranch, onto the neighbors. We lost signal on the garmin. On the topo he was heading to a box canyon. Thought we better leave the guns because it was on another ranch. We start that direction with the rest of the dogs and an 8 month old pit. Im cussing like a little kid the whole way thinking something is not going to go good. After 30 minutes of walking we pick Luke up on the garmin and he is bayed in the canyon. All the dogs get there and all start baying. Great! Now what? There goes the pit pup about 30 yards from the bay. I get there about the same time and he catches an ear and is getting thrown around like a rag doll. That hog breaks and here come about 12-15 more come busting out of a cave. We got dogs and coyotes and hogs going everywhere. The pup took a tooth all the way through his front shoulder and out the back. Steve had a dog take a nasty poke but everyone was ok. Jagds roll out and catch a shoat in the river and Steve's dogs head another direction on a hog. It was a mess but a fun wet hunt...after we made the mile trek back to the ranger! 9-13-09 Made around with a land owner about mid afternoon. Had good cloud cover and a nice breeze and 75 degree weather. We loaded a cooler, 2 Jagds and made rounds thru his ranch hitting areas we typically dont hunt. Both dogs bailed off and ran 500 yards to a muddy tank and caught. We saw a nice little boar on the way to the dogs. Put the dogs back on him and ended with this little guy. Decided to head back to the house and saw a good hog crossing a hill about 400-500 yards away. We put the two Jagds on him. He bayed for just a second and broke...ran about 3-4 miles then off the ranch headed for the Colorado River. We picked our way there and through some neighbors and got to the bay. I watched as the hog broke just as Jack came in for the catch. The dogs ran 100 yards and split bayed. Both on about 200 lb sows. Ended a good weekend of hunts.

Good job! Guess them -sshole deer hunters and starting to pull them back in with the corn. I wish I could have seen all the hysteria in Kyle. I thought about that all weekend and what a cluster it must have been. Especially when I read that Steve had to jump 15' off a cliff to get the coyotes off his dog after he chased them down ! Any pics of the 200lbers? Did yall happen to go into the south pasture? Just wondering how my food plot looked after all the rain.

I'm guessing that you are one of them on the Lometa property? How the heck did you drag yourself back out so soon, Rex? I still feel the effects of that whoopin. Maybe next weekend Ill go back. Steve

Steve leifbarnes...we didnt go in the south. Didnt hunt any of that area except following the dogs and cutting thru the rock damn to the county road. We hunted the san saba peak pastures and saw the big hog in the north up by Marshall's house. Steve...I was rested up by sunday. The weather was too good to pass up an afternoon hunt! I am ready to suck it up and hit that canyon again. You should post your story from the bowhunter board on here. It was more eventful and better written.

Just imagine what those dogs could do if they were 60 lbs instead of 20 lbs. Sounds like a fun weekend. We have both had 60lb dogs so I can tell you exactly what they "could do"...... Crap 2 or 3 times as much Steve

All that I can really say is..... There is a first time for everything.
I was preoccupied with puppies when I left but ya, this was bone head enough that there is no excuse.

Sounds like a good hunt guys.
Look at the bright side, Steve. At least you remembered your truck so you didn't have to walk all the way there to meet Bump!
