My partner has had the alpha about a couple month after it came out. Works great in the open. But very poor on river and deep woods. After my experience and my dogs I better stay with the 320 and just upgrade to new collars.

Yes. U have to update ur handheld if using the 50's to make it work and make ur collars work better. Update both when u get them in.

Thing that sucks about 50 is 220 will not tract it so if you hunt with anyone with a 220 they can't tract your dogs

220 is outdated buddy, 320 will be out dated within the next two years..

Pwilson if you have a 320 yes your 30's will still work.

My garmin dealer told me they will no longer be making the 50's... They are wanting to go to the new collar that is compatible with both astro and alpha...

Making them ur probably right but selling them there r several out there. 1 of my hunting partners has the alpha and it just doesn't have me convinced yet to swap over. He looses signal in deep woods 70% of the time till dog runs through a clearing. I probably won't switch till garmin says they won't replace any collars I own.

Your buddy probably needs to update his unit and collars. I've had my alpha over a year now, along with several others I know, and get great signal... way better than I ever did with the 220 or 320.

I bought it mainly because it has the Tri-Tronics built in. I run shock collars on every dog I turn loose including the bulldog. All mine are trained to the tone to call them in... whether they're just out hunting or in a race. I train the bulldogs with it too... if a hog breaks, they come back. It was always a pain in the a$$ carrying 2 handhelds and strapping 3 collars on every dog, cause I put a telemetry collar on them also.

Plus, the range is so much better than my old 220 and 320.
