Alright fellows got a question. A guy live about 10 minute from me I've known long time takes great care of his dogs well his best dog on day one had a little eye swelling little bit of drainy looking stuff coming out. Day two dogs eye swole completely shut scratching the hair around the head area. Goes to vet ends up scratching all hair out of head and has to be sedated and wrapped to keep from scratching In day three. Day four dog dead as four o clock? Vet says he never seen nothing like it anyone out that way ever seen anything like this. This is over here in bama just wondering what the thoughts might be?

Bo. A friend of mine recently had his dog die from Psuedo Rabies. He brought his gyp on a hunt with me and out of 4 dogs on that hunt, she was the only one to get it!! She hardly even made contact with the 3 hogs that we caught that day! Actually my dogs were the ones that found and caught all three hogs and were covered in blood, with my buddies dog only  baying after the catch and doing alittle bite and let go action.

We came to the conclusion that the reason she was the one to get it was because her immunity system must of been low! About a month and a half before the hunt this gyp had a internal infection from a contusion she must of got when my buddy took her to a bay pen to work her some. The Psuedo Rabies is a herpe virus and is Very Rare to be passed on to other animals! It seems to only infect young dogs, pregnant dogs, and dogs with a low immunity system. Since my buddies gyp was 3yrs old and not pregnant this is how we came up with are conclusion! I have hunted this same area for over 10yrs and Never had this happen to any of my dogs! Hope this helps you out better understand Psuedo Rabies. Also sorry about the dog, its not a good way for animal to die from!!

Yea I'm going to keep hunting but I'm leaving one good dog at home every trip just in case it happens to me. My buddy was hunting with the guy in a competion hunt is when we think the dog contracted it. My buddy said they caught a 60lb hog and knew something was wrong because it was in the middle of the road, it never ran squeled or nothing. No one over here has ever seen any thing with the pseudo. But the vet said today thats what he thought it was they was sending the brain stem off for further testing. I caught a boar awhile back that was real sick with something he couldn't move either he should of been around 200lbs but might have weighed 75lbs he had well over two inch teeth but he was making a dying squeal when we bayed him he was laying on his side. My bulldog caught him and i thought she was going to die a week or so later cause she looked real bad and still ain't 100% im just wondering if it's more of these infected hogs than we think

i'm told that up to 75% of wild hogs carry it . it don't affect them much except for  aborting pigs and having small litters . its passed by blood and saliva , however it has nothing to do with the real rabies .

its hard to contract but if it is , there is no cure .  humans and monkeys cannot contract it .

i learned this first hand the hard way  Wink

Many hogs are carriers of this form of herpies virus. If the hog is stressed, the virus can become active(hot hog). Some of the things that cause stress is sows pigging, castration, poor nutrition, dogs chewing up hog & then released, shot and crippled, etc. If a dog gets any body fluid from a "hot" hog  in his blood stream he will likely die, and it is a horrible death!!

When the dog gets the virus from a hog that is shedding the virus, it is a 7 day cycle for the virus to kill the animal. My buddy had his dog put down be fore the 7 days! Hogs do not show any signs with the virus, and it's not fatal to them. It is 100 percent fatal for the dogs that get it!
In Florida the info I have read said that 50-60 percent of the hogs carry the virus. At least that's what FWC is stating.
