Food for thought: Why can't we all get together & try to get a vaccine developed for our dogs against pseudo? I was told back in the mid 1980s by a Texas A&M vet--professor that he could  come up with a vaccine for our dogs but the pharmicudical  companies would not give him a grant to produce the vaccine because there weren't enough hog hunters to justify the cost of producing it. If you ever watched a dog die from pseudo, it would be in your head for the rest of your life. It is a terrible death. It seems that there are enough hog hunters nowdays to justify producing a vaccine. My hunting buddy & I have lost 12 dogs to pseudo over the years and we need a vaccine for our dogs.If anyone has any ideas on how to  get this done, please take action on this.

Several years ago, there was an outbreak south of me, and I was talking to my Vet. about it. We have been friends since the early '60's. He thought that he could take the hog vaccine and with a series of light doses, give a dog some imunity to pseudorabies. I was willing to try it so he ordred the vaccine. It wasn't but a day or two that the State contacted him and wanted to know who owned the hogs, how many and there location. He told them what he wanted to do and they said , forget about it.
I guess it will take someone with some political pull have a pet get it to get something done.

BigO it was off lable for him to do that which is why they shut him down. It would need to be a vet with research credentials to conduct such testing along with a temporary waiver .

I wish we could do something, ive asked my vet,he dosent have much to say,in my parts we call it the mad itch,if you ever see it you will wonder why ppl higher up dont make a vaccine.i sent a dog to state college to be told yes its positive for pseudo, then i ask what can be done, and nothing, was told someone would call me back.never did,go figure.the best thing is to put dog down,we owe it to the dog as dogmen.

John, from what I can gather, pseudorabies has been eradicated in domestic swine herds and no one vaccinats for it unless there is an outbreak. That would explain the state comming down on my Vet. and wanting to know about the hogs to be vaccinated. I don't know why they wont develope a vaccine for other animals as it can affect cows, sheep, goats, cats, dogs and coons but not humans. It is still found in feral hogs anywhere in the world where there is high consentrations of them. The most concerning thing I found is that the virus can live in water and bedding, when conditions are right, for several days. It is mostly passed to other species by direct contact with nasal discharge and salava. It can be transmited from hog to hog by sexual contact as well. It is a form of herpes virus and as a virus antibiotics won't work.

I think the place to start is Texas A & M. When I talked to a vet-professor  there  many years ago, he was very interested. I can't  remember his name & I figure he's retired by now.

It looks like nobody  is interested enough to get involved, but if you had ever watched a dog die with this $hit I think  You would feel differently.
