Judge, it's hard to stop one in 1,000's of acres of pine cut over. Hogs will leave the fastest dogs behind real quick. I've taken lots of folks over the years that are used to hunting easier country with plentiful hogs... they say if this is all they had to hunt they'd quit huntin'.

I like long range dogs that bay the vast mojority of hogs within hearing distance.

Range is how far they go to find scent. Bottom is how far the will follow that scent to make it stand and look at them.

I thought that was what the original question statement was. The rest is preference. What works for one may or may not work for the other. As style changes so do the requirements.

If I had dogs that never quit a hog.  I would imagine I would not still b hunting hogs .  I would b throwen under the jail house somewhere.  Sure I like dogs with great bottom and stay till the end.  The thing is t g ese days with the land I hunt I have to have a happy medium are else am not gonna b hunting because all my money is going for fines. So Happy medium is key with me in both range and bottom.  I been on 30 mile races all day and half the nite and be trespassing like a big dog just waiting on the law to drive up are meet a piised off land ower with a gun which one time I did.  So if a dog finds me hog on a consistent basics and has maybe not great great bottom but for the most part enuff range and bottom to get most hogs we get on but will come back after a four five hour chase t h en Am good with that.  Now on the other hand if said dog comes off in a short time no he will not work for me.  So I guess a person could say am a happy camper in our three four hour races when we do most time end up with the hog and if not that is th ood also cant get them all but we are then off to find the next one and a lot of times not that far while the big big bottom dogs and men are still chasing and waiting.  This is just me man I do not expect anybody to see eye to eye with me and if not thats great and wish the best of luck to anybody.  Its all about what a man needs and wants.  I do mot consider these kindt dogs culls just maybe they are smarter than we think.  To each his on.

We honestly don't have as many, don't get me wrong we have groups here and there but mostly you ll catch one outta that group and it ll be after a race of some sort. I mean hell you still can't even use a damn tracking dog for deer cause of the outlaws back in the day runnin deer dogs 99% of those folks hog hunted too. These areas have been hunted for a Long dang time since forsure my great grandpa in some cases of where I hunt and that's not including my grandpa and now myself. So after 100 years of running hogs one would expect them to learn to run from dogs and not baying when they re found.

X2 but I don't think others have experienced hunting behind this type of dog. Not saying people don't have good dogs but there's just some dogs that have no quit what so ever. And you're honestly just not gonna keep up on foot. I really don't care who you are. 4 legs travel faster then 2.

Per Colby and Judge's conversation, being a very non experienced hog dogger I have seen it first hand. Had a guy that contracts out to private ranches in the Anahuac area and the hogs there bay up pretty easy. He and his box full of Parker dogs along with a bulldog come to my neck of the woods (Buna area) where the hogs are dogged hard and never stopped the first hog. Does hit the ground running, hunted hard, but those hogs blew through that river bottom and never let up. We caught his dogs about 4 hrs later and he said straight up, "I am gonna have to regroup fellas, my dogs will never stop runners like this."  We had a good conversation similar to the one going in this post. Being a beginner, it was very informative and interesting, and enlightened me that hog doggin is all about adapting and diversity.

I gotcha lacy man where is your neck of the woods.    I have hunted with rangy dogs Lt I have found that most long range dogs ones that go 1000 yards or further will pass up hogs closer than that just cuz they haul but out of the gate. doesn't meen much to me now my dogs have struk a bunch of hogs out at 800 yards then go 6 miles to stop them so I don't see your point just cuz you don't go to them on foot don't meen others can't or won't. Now if I hunted a big ranch ya you would be stupid to walk if ya can hood or cast or what ever works but if ya don't walk most spots I got your dogs will be bayed up miles away if they cant stop them so really I don't get what your saying

My point is your not gonna keep up walking. Your dog chased a hog for 20 miles. Ok. I know you didn't keep up with the dog. 4 legs move faster then 2. And these type of dogs don't have to be long range. They have too have the bottom. I've hunted behind 2 of these dogs and I promise you your not gonna keep up, walkin or even drivin maybe. And wether I'll walk too my dogs or not isn't the question cuz I will if I have too. But i got a truck and ranger for a reason and even then have trouble keeping up with certain dogs.

the cream rises to the top...hogs have adapted pretty quick...they are leggy and fast...like already mentioned, if they are dogged alot they get smart and would rather run than fight...if not dogged much loose bay dogs will bay hogs...but it won't take too long and these dogs will not bay up but will run and run...they hit the thick brush and get ahead...then they take a break until the dogs get close and then they hit another thick spot...

I have had dogs that would catch plenty of hogs in the open wooods/country but came up empty handed especially in the summer when very hot and the vegitation was thick...these were good to great dogs in my opinion...loved to hunt them mostly in the late winter when most of the vegetation was down...but thick palmetto country it is bad year round...

I am working on a pack more or less of the same style except adding 1/4 or so APBT...retaining nose, the ability to find game and lots of hunt and bottom is what I want in these dogs...stopping a hog at the first oppurtunity is what I want but with the sense to not go all out catch because don't need dogs overheat and/or have a short life span without having to say why...

Range...enough to find a hog if it is within a decent range...and enough grit to shut one down at the first oppurtunity...having lots of bottom a must but not having to go too long a distance because...hopefully it is a caught hog...and some will get away and it is our job to analyze the situation and work to improve on it...

quoting BIGO...
I like long range dogs that bay the vast mojority of hogs within hearing distance.

Opinions are like hole in the butts everyone's got one But I'll tell u what mine starts to burn if our dogs go past a mile mile and a half I'm pissed I hate to wait for a dog when the next property we r hunting has 30+ hogs just sitting there waiting for us lol it all has to do with where u hunt and what it takes to get hogs there my dogs are loose when a hog will bay but When they run they will do what it takes to stop em once they stop they back on up again anything 100 lbs and smaller they catch my pot lickers are short to med range and we catch 150 + hogs every year no problem and we been running these hogs for years hear too
