One other thing I would like to say here.  If am going hog hunting am going to take my dogs to were I think there is hogs .  Most the time in a area that is mile are less long x mile wide are so .  Am gonna drop my dogs out as close as I can to the hot spots most the times we will road them up to the hot spot and they are gone way before we ourselves ever get there .  Of course the hogs are not always there in that spot and the dogs really have to work to line one out but most the time do within this mile x mile kinda spot .  This is why I say range is way over rated to me unless you just have a big time use for it then its a good thing .  A dog that stays busy hunting looking for sign and pigs I don't think have to range out mile mile and half .  Anyway just me .

in decent hog sign If I want to free cast my dogs while I wait I know they will strike in one hundred yards or 1 mile...if I am moving along I want them to hunt a little closer and look for hotter sign...but they will find the hogs if they are to be found...that is about the kind of dogs I like...dogs that have the knack to find the game they are after...

And the best type of dogs are the ones who strike pigs in real life and not just those stories

Judge , Am with you on this also.  I call BS on this also. That aint nothing but EGO.  I have seen some mighty mighty fine hog dogs that would come back after a couple hours are more because we could not get to them on that proptery and Some come back half dead !  I have seen more than a few of these kinds of dogs that have found hundreds of hogs and were great dogs .  If they were not bona fide hog dogs then I need to hang it up.  Also  I have seen more than a few of these dogs give their lives doing what they loved and die with a mouth full of boar  .

Mike and lacy man check this out. When my dogs strikes a hog 50% of the time it's a caught hog on the spot. If it runs a mile or so it best not be 80 lbs. and the further it run past 2 or 3 miles and my dog is still on it tells me that is a big stud hog most hogs that run that far or farther I catch. And if y'all are implying that y'all's never fall off a hog or get out run I will call bs on that to the best dogs get beat to. My dogs ain't nothing fancy but they do a good job for me and that's all I or u should care about if your will to walk ten miles thru some rough rough thickets cross rivers and creeks no buggys or trucks you are more than welcome to come and show me what a dog is sposta do lol

I start thinking I need longer range dogs sometimes but when I look back at the ones i've had and compare them to what i have now. I hands down get more hogs bayed now than ever before. I bayed more last year than the previous 3 combined and that was in around a four month period.I rarely go and come up empty and i hunt a lot less now days. I wish my dogs had more grit but as far as find dogs they are about as good as i could hope for. I thought the goal was to get game. if the dog does that i think be extremely happy. over thinking the process just ruins the hunt. if the dogs good then the pigs are there or they arent and if they are the dogs find them. so what does the rest really matter?

What I was implying down here when the hog is found unless it's a rcd they re gunna run.. Period... and if your dog is gunna just go a mile or two then you won't be catching many hogs down here.. Typically if we strike a hog it's 3-6 hours later before you see that hog. That even goes for the 80 lbers if they slip out once they find em. They don't take a bay until their tired (referring to the hogs) but if y'all want your more than welcome to come hunt down here anytime to see what we re talkin about. Where bouts you boys from??

I guess it's all relative to the hogs you're hunting. Most of the places I hunt the hogs are so dog spoiled they run like deer and never check up. If you don't have a dog that will stick with one, you won't fare to well. About 4 or 5 hours is all I care to run one and I'll usually call the dogs out after that... but I've had more all day or all night races than I care to remember. Quitting is the number one thing I cull for, and I've culled plenty.

I hear what your saying lacy man the furthest my dog has ran a hog is around 20 miles and over the hole day and night has done this many times. Most of my dogs won't even bark at any thing under 100 lb the hogs up where I hunt have been dogged by me or some one else since the late 80ds. The key thing I have learned in stopping these hogs that will run is a balance of speed and gritt. I am in waxahachie tx hunt all over the area It can be very hard hunting around here if your dog won't bust the thickets you can give it up

Mike my ideal dog shouldn't have to keep up with a hog it should stop it. Know like any thing in life this is the plan it don't always work out but when it does it's the best of both worlds. I do like a big bottom dog tho so when they take off you might have a chance to bay up again

Isn't that near the dfw area? Pretty juicy country from what I ve always heard and the hogs tend to bay nice there? Maybe It was a story.
