He is now a barr.  I believe his new ear tag # is 25.  He was started by a nice hog hunter in my club named Ernie.  He offered to let us join in.  After his walker ran this boar for 3 miles, we packed my dogs in.  When we saw the boar cross the road, we dumped even more on him.  No catchdogs were used.  Zeke had one ear, and one of his plott x blackmouth curs had the other.  Can you say "Caught Hog"?  I'll be hunting with Ernie again.  He was very knowledgable.  You should have seen me trying to climb a tree when we released the barr.  Man, it was pathetic.  Cheesy

Good hog Josh. He will make a good barr. Wish more guys would cut and release. The place I hunted last week wants us to kill every hog we get our hands on. We used to cut and relase every boar we caught at the ranch and we grew some good barrs.

I will be glad when it cools off some here in Fla. It was some kind of hot when we hunted.

That is not true.  Certain places tend to have runners no matter what you're packing.  My club happens to be one of "those" places.  I hunt all around North Central Florida.

None on my part. Wink

The likelyhood of having a pack of curs that could trail in the wet terrain I hunt would be few and far between.  Not saying they don't exist.  I'm saying I don't see them often.

Shocked Shocked Shocked... Man, most of the stuff I hunt is swampy and wet... don't do too bad with these ol' cur dogs. Wink

Mike,

Don't do it...Don't you know that the hogs in that area are just about impossible to get bayed with curs.  Heck, I hear they even have palmettos, gators,  and standing water in that area.

Well, curs are known for their ability in  rough and swampy areas... They are also more athletic than hounds...so, nose and bottom would be the only areas where the hound would have the advantage over the average curs imho...

These cur/hound debates always make me laugh a bit, from my perspective, if you have plenty of hogs and you can get on them fairly quickly a hound is a liability...However, if you don't have a boat load of hogs and you have land to hunt then a hound would be an ideal choice...wouldn't think water has much to do with it..

You guys kill me.  I don't live in South Florida where there are a lot of hogs.  You won't just see them walking in fields where I hunt.  It is planted pines, that roll into submerged clear-cuts.  This is a dog hunting club, and it is run 353 days out of the year.  The game on this place knows that running is all they have for survival.  I've got buddies that hunt curs.  Granted, they are not the best curs that there are, fact is there are nice. Wink  If you have a pack of curs, and don't hunt a hound with them, I think you would be hard pressed to CONSISTANTLY catch hogs on this particular piece of property.  Again, more power to you if you have the kind of cur than can do it day in day out on this particular parcel of land.  Of the 25 or so hog hunters in this club, 0 run only curs.  Experience has proven that something else needs to be present.   Evil

Really,

So the average curs that you see can take a cold track let's say 4 hours old though a submerged overgrown clear-cut say 1 mile square.  I'm not talking 1" water on the ground here and there.  I'm talking 12" deep for the majority of the block.  Please bring this cur dog out for a hunt.  I'd love to see him go.  If he can't handle it, we'll let the hounds out of the box to help him along.
