for some reason the first thing i thought of was what if a dog got in there and had pups. I'd never get through that little opening, have to send the kid in to be the tunnel rat with the wormer.

Might actually make a great room for the kids. Very cost efective compared to the alternatives. I'm glad you brought that up. As far as for the dogs, the price needs to come way down to be something I invest in.

An old fellow I hunt with told me about some dog houses someone had. Said they took a 55gal. plastic barrel, dug a hole and put the barrel in it standing up with about 1/2 or more of the barrel under ground and the other half above. They then bolted a plywood platform on top and cut a hole in the barrel several inches above ground level to keep water from getting in. He said the guy that had them said they were warm in the winter and cool in the summer due to the dirt acting as an insulator. I have thought about trying them as I can get all the free barrels I want but lazines and tree roots just keep me from trying to dig that hole.

I am thinking about using some culvert pipe burried in a side hill facing south. About a 6' section with a flap over the opening.

I cant get over the idea of a dog getting down there and haveing pups or getting sick or something of that nature and then me trying to get them out with my feet up in the air and my head down lol. Do like the 55 gallon drum idea though. How would you keep the rain from blowing in the opening?.

just had an idea to my last post what if you cut the bottom of the barrel off then put the dogs beding on a piece of something off the ground that away if water did get in it would not hold but would soak in the ground?

The barrel idea sounds like a plan to me. Just add a flap over the hole.

well that is why i was saying to put a platform of somesort to keep is a few inches off bottom. I guess I am seeing the barrel more or less getting water in in and it would never dry out. what type of flap would you put on the outside to keep rain out?

on the barrel thing, you would have the hole several inches above the ground so that water couldnt run in it and a plywood platform bolted on top with good overhang to help keep out blowing rain and such.

Seems like a great concept, but I see water and dirt building up in that thing. Probably be a constant pain in the butt trying to keep it clean, not to mention having to dig your yard up to dump it out. I don't think this is gonna work that well... Wind driven rain is gonna blow this idea to pieces...besides that, if anybody has dogs like mine, they'll be diggin a hole out in front of that thing and guess where all the dirt will be kicked??? Let me know how it works, I would love to try one. Shade around my yard is hard to come by. 1/4" sheets of Plywood shades 4 out of 7 of my dog houses.
