I have a 6 year old lead strike dog that is long range with tons of bottom. He has found most all my hogs for me and been my lead dog for years with hundreds of hogs. Well I got him cut pretty good a couple weeks ago and decided i would put him on a automatic dog feeder to fatten up in the off time. Well I got a call today and a boy had seen a big group of hogs so I just grabbed him and a bulldog and headed to him. His cut is almost healed. Well he went right in there found em bayed for a second and come straight out with hogs runnin everywhere. My jaw dropped. NEVER has he done this and I'm telling you he is a jam up strike dog with tons of bottom. He acts like he has no energy since being cut and has bloated a little since being on automatic feeder. What is going on ?? I'm not looking for any mouthin I need help this is my best dog I have ever owned???

Sometimes when a dog gets beat up pretty bad they lose their confidence gets shaken...just be patient and he will come around...someone I know culled a good dog with out giving it a chance to come around...

Reuben the fact that someone culled a dog that you thought was good is VERY irrelevant at this point and in fact you have no leg to stand on as far as you comment goes.   The dog has been culled and I can PROMISE you if a man did not like a dog and culled him then he made the right choice.    Too many guys trade and sale dogs they don't like and that is the problem with the dog world today so it was his dog and he done the right thing no matter what you think, it was his dog.

As far as the question in hand, If this dog had done a good job for me and I had confidence in him I would check him for more serious injuries that might be visible.   If he had been cut down he may still have internal issues going back to the cut down that you can't see and it could be causing him severe pain that he can't physically deal with.   Different deal but I had a proven dog quit me one time and it turned out he had prostate problems that were causing pain he could not deal with.   After the Vet. gave me the medicine to shrink his prostate he was back to normal until he died several years later.

Take him to the vet and get a full blood work on him....Something sounds off on his blood count.

U say the dog is bloated. Is it possible he had been pigging out and the exercise on a full gut got to him. Couple that with possible confidence issues could answer the question. It can't hurt to let a vet check it either. I personally don't feed a dog less than 4 hours before a hunt.

X 2.

Might not have any thing to do with being cut down. I am sure he has been cut quite a bit up to this point. I had a really good cur that was the same as you are describing & all the sudden, he could not run 10 minutes & he would come back. Had blood work done on him & he had a tick disease. Cant think of the name of it but it was the northern strain. He got it bear hunting in Wisc. a few months before.

Oconee...I know for a fact this man had 3 dogs in the past that were outstanding hog dogs...and he had told me about this cur dog he had that was as good as those he thought so highly of...he also told me that dog took a beating from a boar hog and quit hunting...If I had known he was culling that dog I would have taken him in a heartbeat and I would have given the dog a chance...

I have never had a dog to quit me once I decided it was a keeper...but I would give them a chance to come around if needed...but that dog wouldn't be used for breeding if it had that mindset...

your 100 percent right...the owner decides when to cull if that is his or her wish to do so...I can think whatever I want about it just like anything else...I was just commenting on what I have seen and I was offering my opinion to Justin11...my point was to make sure and give the dog a chance to come around...

matter of fact I probably ruined a pup that was showing lots of promise and at about 6 months he was in the thick briars after some hogs and a devil hog got on him and he quit hunting...so I culled him 5 or 6 months later because he wouldn't come out of it...I like a pup that can take a whipping and get back in their face...or get back in it a week or 2 later...because I want one that can pass on those same traits...if the dog is not going to be considered for breeding then one can be more forgiving...

6 yr old dog that had been on that many hogs should be solid as an oak tree on what his mindset should be.

Agree on the invisible injury.

Something is ailing him to have a complete change like that especially at that age. Figuring he has been cut down before and that isn't his first rodeo.

Inflammation in the joints, ongoing infection are just the start of a list of things it could be without visible signs.

Other thing to consider.........i figure that's the first strenuous activity he has done since the wrecking? Full strength and endurance has to be built back up........if in fact he is completely healed with no permanent damage.

Watch your dogs movement and mental status ......they will tell you all you need to know if you take the time to observe.

In my opinion a 6 yr old dog should be trying to get at a hog on deaths bed so if he is not something is up plane and simple. The fast way to ruin a young dog is to get him on good hogs at to young it can stop the cold or amp them up best know the dog in side and out to hunt at 6 month

Most everything is healed so I rolled him over to make sure I haven't missed anything and I found where the hog put a hole in his nut sack that's still healing up so maybe that had something to do with it ?? I'm not sure.. I'm gonna keep him chained up for another week and let everything heal all the way and get ready to take him next weekend if all goes well!! Wish me luck !!

I wouldnt hunt either if i had a hole in the sack. My wife is a 911 dispatcher and she got a call this year during deer season where a guy fell out of the stand and some sort of metal rod went through his sack and was sticking out of his stomach. She said he was as calm as a cucumber when he called. She had to ask him if he was in fact calling about him self.

I was just gonna give y'all an update and I let him heal up and get good and healthy looking again and wen this evening and he went 800 yards struck one and carried it half a mile and kept it bayed until the other dogs got there and took us about 30 minutes to get around to them and we caught a good sow so I think it's safe to say his cuts was botherin him too bad to hunt and he's back to his old self. Thanks for all the input !!
