what method did u use to bleach out the skull? iv had 1 hanging in a tree for nearly 2 yrs and the the hide has mummified to the bone. i did try and bleach 1 back in 2010 and that ended up causing a mad wife and a stinking house. granted it was nice and white, but boiling it inside left a foul odor, even though i used ox-clean tablets and dish soap. i can't leave anything on the ground due to my dogs getting ahold of it or the notes dragging it off, so i figured the tree was the best choice but no joy.

I just simmered all the meat and cartilage off OUTSIDE lol..slowly simmering seems to help me not to have all the teeth fall out. Then once its good and clean i soak it in peroxide. A 50/50 regular peroxide and water. That will usually get it plenty white enough. Just keep an eye on it because it will whiten as it dries as well. Then if there are still stains or whatever on it I'll take some flat white spray paint and hit it with that. Sometimes i will paint the whole skull. I did some with a glossy white one time and everybody else liked it but i didn't. Just didnt look like natural bone. Oh and the dogs ate the hog brains...nasty sob's

Hanging in a tree has always resulted in a mummy for me. I have wired the jaw and skull to a rope and chunked it in the pond with good results. Also have placed them beside an any mound and coverd them with a tub. Put some blocks on top to keep the dogs from getting it. I took an old keg and cut it in half and use it on a fish cooker to boil them.

It is much easier if you skin out the head first, trying to remove as much meat and gristle as possible. Then boil it like Georgia does, simmering it. You can use clorox in place of hydrogen peroxide, but you cut the clorox to water ratio down. Too much chlorine and the bone will flake off when dried. This has worked good for me with hog and deer heads. I would like to try the Dermestid Beetles, but a colony of them are hard to maintain.  You have to be careful not to give them any spoiled or rotten meat.

I saw a nature center put skulls in an aquarium with some type of beetles. They cleaned up the skulls pretty good. Then it could be used in the mixture. I have never tried it

I throw all my skulls in a bucket and completely submerge it with water. Then let nature take its course. In the summer they will be clean within a month or so. After that I rinse them off, let em dry then apply the two part peroxide from the beauty supply store. Come out looking good and I don't have to mess with skinning or boiling.

Its just quicker for me to boil the whole head. Skin ,meat and all. I have a big cast iron pot specifically for it. I just keep a fire going under it all day. I usually have another project going on outside while i boiling the head. Im sure there are easier ways to do it but thats just what works for me.
