 Huh?

Hi all.
I wonder where you prefer your catch dogs to grasp and hold the hog: ear, snout, nose, any, neither??
Did anyone experience the different breeds of catch dogs having specific preferences where to hold?
Thanks.

I like an ear dog, and I'll tolerate a jaw dog...anything else is a culled dog for me.

I've only used Pitbulls, and to me it's hit or miss with how they catch. You can help em start on the ear, but if they wanna catch anywhere else they are going to.

I wonder why you prefer the ear over the nose/ snout?
I have had teared-off ears being retrieved to me, but the hog was gone...
Also, I have the feeling that holding by the snout a hog has less leverage to hurl the catch dog around as when hold by the ear, making the dog less prone to be injured.
What are your views?

A nose dog is fine on big hogs, but with big hogs usually come big teeth, and they always seem to get a tooth through the chin or roof of the mouth. It bleeds bad and there's no real way to protect em. I have a nose dog I'm replacing now, last boar hog he got cut in that spot and he like to have bled down.

On small hogs, a hard bite will break the snout or break a leg and ruins future barrs for me. Game bred dogs seem to like the nose and legs a lot in my experience, just genetics I reckon.

Id hav the agree with you ben, big hogs=big cutters and can lead to a possibly fsltal injury. But what works for some doesnt or wont work out for others.
No right or wrong answer, just different methods that work for those persons

My dog puts the hog in a full nelson and has it tied when i get there. Those are hard to come by. I got some pups off him. If anybody's interested. All kidding aside i prefer an ear dog. And if you can get lucky enough to have a dog that likes to stay side by side with the hog when he's caught i like that as well.  Just my opinion.  Wink

Dogs that catch on the nose/snout typically break the snouts of smaller pigs and sows- that is a No Go in my way of thinking.  Ear only.

My dogos grab ear or top knot every time. An do not let go. If they do they are culled. Not culling them is the reason for number 2ty dogs in any breed.

And if there is no ear available?   Snout is fine for me. But if he is catching alone so far its been ear every time. .

No offense but if you've had ears retrieved to you from a catchdog, you've cut him loose from way to far away. Everybody has their own way of doing things but where I'm from you cut a bulldog loose and have him hold only for as long as he has to, meaning you get there as fast and as quickly as you can for two reasons, 1) to help out your main man, the catchdog, you don't want him getting thrashed and wore out while you are taking your time getting there, and 2)there's a market for hogs where I'm from and you don't want them tore up when you get there to tie them.
Like I said everybody has their own way of huntin/thinkin and that's mine.

X2 on that last week caught a 200+ sow and bulldog caught in the mouth and the sow broke her jaw I wasn't a happy camper. I would much rather an ear dog buts that's just me....
