hey guys, long time lurker here. First let me thank ya'll for the large amount of knowledge this site has had on it for the new hog hunters. It has been a real asset to me. Anyway, got a question. Had my bulldog break both top canines out on a big hog a couple of weeks ago. He still has good teeth and the bottom k9's are still good. Several folks have told me to retire him to breeding stock. What to do? I feel like as long as he's catching ears, he's not using the k9's that much, it's more of the back teeth. If he was catching on the jaw or nose I could see the loss of K9's being a factor. He was a predominately ear catcher and had good holding power and he's not ready to be a "yard dog" yet.. Thanks

As long as he still catches and holds... keep on catching with him. Grin

Seen several with no canines and my dog, going on 7, has one canine left and is still catching fine.

thanks mike... that is exactly what i wanted to hear!!!!
My thoughts exactly.. I'd rather have him with gums knowing he's going
to give it his all, up side of one with a mouth full of teeth that won't hold.

I agree with Mike.  My main man is missing one and a half and no problems with him.

A good catchdog holds with his heart as much as his teeth!

Well said, he will still catch, mulemans A. bulldog has been ranker and harder to get off since we had to cut his top k9 out with a pocket knife after he caught and we couldnt get to him for over an hour. .02

I have a 7 yr old with no canines left, i trust him more than any dog i know of. He is retired but only cause i believe with looseing all his canines he deserves the retirement. He does come on paid hunts and for PR work with new people.

My best cd has one broken off , when he hits a hog I can almost bet you its not going anywhere unless its a really big one that he can't hold but he won't let go. I have almost lost that dog many times cause he's really fast and beats all the others to the bay, therefore he's the first one to take the hits, but he get in there and gets it done. I know for a fact his broken tooth bothers him cause he's always opening his mouth in the pens and if you mess with it he jurks away. It was going to cost to much to pull it so I just put orajel on it before each hunt and he does fine.

Come on, Just because a dog is given to you, dosen't mean its worth less Huh? Dosen't make much sense. If its really bothering him, I would get it removed or cut out, especially if it was my best CD.

I paid just over $400 to have my dogs tooth extracted and the gum line filled to prevent further bone loss when he broke a canine just above the gum.  Really didn't matter what it cost, it's what he needed.

Heck, you just spent probably $500 having the ten rescued dogs spayed and neutered didn't you?

When you got 24 dogs to fed, cut gear to buy, tracking collars, medical supplies, and a truck payement on top of that when your only 19 its kinda hard to spend lots of money on a dog that still catches good, why fix it if he still catches everytime and never regrips and no I didn't just spend money on spay and neuter, our pound is run by a good friend plus my dad works for the city, we try and give the dogs a fighting chance, we don't like to see dogs go down for nothing when they can be used fore something!!!

If you cannot afford to properly care for the dogs, then don't have them.   I see it all the time, people have more dogs than they can afford to take care of, and all the dogs suffer as a result. Might need to start considering quality over quantity.  It's not just the young guys either...

Colton, I would say that you posting on a public forum, that you are aware of a medical issue with your dog, and you know that there is a solution, as you have already spoken to a vet to the point of getting a price on the procedure, then I would say that you are certainly having a negative impact on hog dogging in general.  Plain and simple, take care of the dogs, especially the ones that take care of you.

If you don't understand, then there's really no point in me discussing this any longer.

While I can appreciate your willingness to take in rescues and give them a chance, Texas Law (Tex. Health & Safety Code §828.003) is pretty specific on the requirements of adopted animals.  I would probably be careful with sharing publicly.

I really don't want to beat a dead horse here but how does anyone keep and care for 24 dogs properly while working a full time job.  I could see people that hunt for a living or train dogs or keep dogs for their friends maybe but dang.  I have looked at your kennels and I say good job but looks and gear don't tell me the whole story, if you have a dog that needs medical attention and you cannot afford it is time for you to re-acess your current situation and make sure you are not over doing it.  What do you do when you HAVE to take one to the vet?  Just something to think about...
