I am acyually healing a dog up from the same issue!! I got alot of great help on here but the most effective advise i got was to spray wound spay the first couple days to keep flies and insects off of it then quit using it and go to a hydro therapy for a while and the wound will acually stay very clean and it also help my dog absorb the big knot that came up where the hog poked him! mine looked great after the hydro treatment!! I hope i helped some

Sometimes we get in a rush after the hunt, myself included. Too many times i have left a poke unattended where I should have cut the skin a little more to be able to sew the muscle back together, due to being fatigue after the hunt. If you can avoid that I would say to sew it the healing time is cut in half and will heal better without the knot lots of times. Stick your finger in there to make sure there are no tendons cut also to verify on depth and that if near the belly or back that the intestines aren't pushing through the muscle lineing. If so open the dog up a little more to repair the muscle and push the intestines back in without twisting or pinching them.

What is hydro treatment?
Run a the water hose on the cut for about a minute or two. It cleans. My vet tells me not to sew or staple a puncture...only a cut. I have never had a bad muscle cut. I need to look into that.

Just make sure it heals from the inside out, just do hydrotherapy,
