Had a dog tonight get hit by a big boar her chest cavity was sucking and gargling. Got to her and got the air out best I could put a ziplock bag over the wound and warped her up within ten seconds she recovered her breathing hope she makes it she is a good dog. Any one done this before and did it help

I had one get shot with an air rifle before by some punk kids and its chest was making that noise took her to the vet and it was a punctured lung Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

keep her off her feet best you can and keep her laying on that side if possible, it will allow any drainage to come between the bag and her skin. if you can get a drain tube with a check valve in the hole and get it sealed off, that will allow the fluids to drain out but prevent air from getting in and collapsing her lung/s. if i knew where my medic bag was and could guide my wife to the check valve and tube, id have her send it to you, but if you can get a breather valve and tube for a tck axle, that will work as well.

I always try to keep a roll of Saran Wrap for this. Sounds like you handled it well.

That's how we were taught to take care of a suckling chest wound in the Army. You did the right thing. Now the whole in the lung will have to be tacking care of so it can reinflate. Good luck with her Judge.

I've had to fix it a couple of times. The last 2 times it happened I had a garbage bag in the truck so I used it along with duct tape to seal the wound until I could get the wound closed. Closing the hole in the chest cavity with sutures as quickly as possible is a must...

As of now she is up breathing ok we will see how she does. Ya tazD some of those skills we learned come in handy at times

Man that sucks that happened to my buddy he lost five dogs in one year and has had to completely rebuild and having a hard time doing it.
How's she doing anyway.

Ya it sucks rebuilding seems like it's twice as hard to once you been where you want to be. She was up moving around eating so that's good

I can see you've got everything under control, but I can't urge people enough, who are new to this sport, to learn how to handle things like this in the field. If you hunt enough, you will save a dog's life by knowing these skills. I keep 1 gallon zip-lock bags and petroleum jelly in my med kit for this scenario. I cut the bag open so it is just a single piece of plastic and put petroleum around the wound because it helps create a seal, especially if you have a dog with a thick coat. I was taught to compress the chest while someone blows air in the dogs nose to inflate the lungs. This will help get as much air out of the chest cavity as possible and once the wound is sealed make it easier for the lungs to inflate. Then I wrap the whole thing up with vet wrap to keep it in place. Maybe we need to start a thread about field trauma skills everyone should learn.

Sterling you are dead on some of these skills take yrs to learn. I went to combat medic school 3 times over 8 yrs and the last time was totally different than the first and that has been almost 20 yrs ago lol. Ya a newbe can get his hart broke real fast if he don't know what to do a few items in a bag and some common sense with a touch of training can be a life saver. Just knowing how to do a proper field dressing or how to use a hemostat can miracles
