man ol faithfull my 68 f-100 300 long six  Is giving me fits .  now I am a darn good mechanic especially on these old fords

she started out running and then banging out like she was losing fire .  pressure is building up in the fuel system and I have replace every component in the fuel system from a new fuel tank to the carburetor and still will crank after setting a bit then load up and die . I have replaced this week [ or swapped out ] all electrical components including a new ingnition switch . tried a couple different coils and wires and condensors in the dist. but with the same results [ of no change and original problem ]  .  now I know I'm getting old and feeble minded but am I overlooking something that would cause this ?   I've tried rebuilding the carb with same results so I bit the bullet and spent the 200 on another from o-reilly but still same problem  .  I'M STUMPED ON THIS ONE !!!!   any ideas ?

one other thing when she runs for that little bit she runs smooth a silk so I don't believe I have a timing or dist trouble  .

I had a ford do that was the voltage regulated. If it starts out running good and then shuts off sounds like a carb problem but you got a new one most old ford won't run if timing out much. That's a hard one there could be a vacuum issue

lol yeah I know  . hell the only vaccume line is from the carb to the timing advance . this one has me plum stupid  . lol

only thing I haven't tried is running a jumper from the coil to the battery and bumping the starter to bypass all the electrical components . hell that's how you steal one without the key  . lol

you know I use o-rielly auto parts for years since I've had this truck and last month I needed a new distributor and I am a stickler for saving receipts . I took my old dist and receipt up there and got my lifetime warranty on a fifteen year old dist .  lol  I thought they were going to call the news media to come film it   lol

I have been needing a new fuel tank and sending unit for a while now  and I found a place called   OBSOLETE AND CLASSIC AUTO PARTS  up in okla city okla .  i've had their catalog for a while   well Friday at 9 am I called and ordered what I wanted  and at 9 am Saturday morning the fed x truck pulled in the driveway with my parts . I would highly recommend them for anyone needing some parts for the older vehicals . I have never had such quick service from a mail order parts house , I was amazed .

Sounds like uv sliped a couple teeth on the timing chain and gearing. My old 79 acted the same, ran fine till it got almost to op temp. Couldnt figure it out, changed the volt reg, replaced carb, replaced mechanical pump, even went to a boost pump and blocked off the mech pump hole with a cover plate. I finally pulled the eng apart figuring i dropped a piston or sheared my crank or cam. Come to find out, i jumped 4 teeth from a worn cam chain.

lol ya'll are cute , but I may have this gas tested . and I thought about a fuel regulator but I have never had to use one in all the years I've been driving this truck which is since 1997 . hell the motor is still fresh since 2006 I've only put about 45,000 miles on it

When mine slipped the chain, it blew the air breather/cleaner off, stripping the all thread out of the carb (why i had to replace the carb) n caught fire.

yes you are right on the gears you have to line the two dots up when you put them together , but this is a newer style block [ crate motor ] and I don't remember if it had the fiber cam gear or not . been since 2006 since I've had hardly any problems out of the truck except for routine preventive maintenance .  I don't wait for something to fail on the side of the road I will usually change out a part after so many years or miles working or not .

I think ur right too, but iv seen timing gears be 2-3 teeth off after a couple 100,000 miles, which comes from excessive wear from the crappy steel they were made from. But with his only having 1/4 of the miles on it, it shouldnt be the timing but he has went through the other possible causes. What he is describing sound more of a timing issue then a spark issue if not timing, which both go hand in hand.

Mr whitten, did u pull the distributor all the way out? Could the bevel gear on the distro be worn or possibly jumped a couple teeth? O know most distros have a roll pin holding the gear in place. It could hav sheared off throwing ur timing way off

man them old 300 are hard to kill. To me it's one of if not the best old motor ever made.  Robert are we talking a minute or two before it starts jumping around or does it do it  after 10 to 20 minutes of running? If it's right off the bat then I would pull the side covers off and check your push rods and lifters. If it takes a few minutes then I would check for water in the fuel. May have a head gasket giving you fits.  It sounds like you've checked everything else out.

Good luck with her buddy.....

lol  yes sir I've been over under and around the old girl  , I haven't pulled the valve covers or side plates yet but may have to if this new carb I'm waiting on doesn't do the trick . the one they sent out looked like a frankenstien built carb  lol . I called the service tech at the manufact. [ rebuilders ] and he said they are running out of origanals on the bodies and have to have them made . but the fuel stream looked real weak to me on it like the acc. pump gasket was bad . when I do find the problem I know it will be simple . heck the motor I pulled when I swapped out engines had more rings in the oil pan than on the pistons and she still ran all over texas [ a little weak but would run  ]   lol  these old sixes will take a beating for sure .

Have you checked to make sure the gas tank is venting?

yeah ed I did  ,  the tank itself sits behind the seat and it vents thru the fuel cap . I tried running it with and without the cap . I'm pretty sure [ hoping anyways  lol ] that the rebuilt carb was bad . it wouldn't be the first . . have to wait till tomorrow [ sat ] for my carb to get here  [ I hate this bohump east texas ] you can't ever just go buy something you have to have it ordered and wait a couple days for it  lol .  but if this carb don't work i'll pull the pushrod cover and check the lifters I could have an exhaust lifter bad in it causing a cylinder to load up . as far as the fuel it's good and fresh I put new fuel in my new fuel tank .  the old tank was rusted and passing trash since I've owned the truck . I will use the old tank after coating the inside as a reserve fuel tank mounted in the bed behind the cab like my old 71 had . I liked that set up in my other old truck .

old man always taught me to start with the easiest fix and work up... though i am a pesimist and usually go teh other direction.  rusted gas tank? im sure you did, but what about fule filter? the rust will suck up and stop it up and then when the pressure off drift back down and let it run until they clog again.

lol   me too . as far as the fuel system I have all ways ran two inline filters on the old girl one in front of fuel pump and filtered again ahead of the carb .  but as she set right now she is a totally virgin fuel system with all new everything from tank and soon to be carb .  I checked my fuel pressures coming from the pump yesterday while I was going thru the wiring for shorts and what not from the new ignition switch . the pressures and wiring are all good . but I have quit for now waiting on the carb to get here tomorrow . then we shall see if I need to break open some inspection ports for the push rods and lifters  . .  but like I said when she cranks and runs for that little bit she will purr like a kitten  lol  then fall all to pieces  . timing is good I reset and rechecked all that yesterday as well by pulling up the timing mark and checking the piston for tdc and made sure it was still in line with the #1 position on the distributor .   it has been an adventure for sure , but I've never had a bad day working on the old girl she has been very good to me all these years . and I'm sure many more years to come . 3 more years and she get's a full off frame restore project going . that's what I'm giving her for her 50th birthday  lol
