I recently had the opportunity to acquire a real nice dog but she is 8yrs old but seems in good health I have hunted her 4 times and she has put pork on the ground each time. I ran her with my young male on one that lasted about 2 hours before he bayed up I really think a lot of this male the hog broke and he smoked the old dog and ended up getting separated in the bottoms in water from the hog meanwhile the old dog loped along and ended up bayed by herself I got all kind of thoughts in my head how long will she be able to hunt is one thing im wondering I assumed I may get 2 more years out of her. I also wonder should I breed her she is absolutely worthy of it but again she's a little long in the tooth.

We hunt our dogs till they can't go no more but on the older ones we choose where and when we hunt them. We only have one gyp now that is 7 and she has slowed up a bunch and usually use her with the pups or help with tracks. We usually don't ruin her with the younger and faster dogs cuz she can't keep up. But if she is worth breeding she can definitely help get her pups started if she had slowed down.

I've got a young started rough dog but wish I had an old pro to line him out a little faster. I wouldn't really care if hey were slow as long as they would show the younger dogs what to look for and help them range out.

I lost one this year at 13yrs of age that hunted til the day he0 died. If she is able to go and wants to go then hunt her til she cant hunt any more! My old dog raised hell any time i tried to leave him home so i rarely ever did.

We have a 8 year old female cur/walker hound whose hunted all her life with us, produced 3 litters of working dog and we still take her.  She used to range really far which would lead to some long nights trying to get her back, but she's quit that as she has got older.  She'll find hogs with our younger dogs, but not near as gritty about it.
It might take her all week to recover, and sometimes she needs a boost in to the box, but we'll keep taking her as long as she wants to go.

I have one that is 10 and one that is 12 that I still hunt they have slowed down but still get it done I have one that is 12 that I just retired I tried to breed her a couple years back and she got poyrometra and I had to have her spayed I would not breed a older dog again unless I felt the reward out weighed the risk

We raised all of our dogs out of our gyp who passed last year and she was 8 1/2 her last litter and she did fine. But we also took extra good care of her. No problems

If I was thinking about breeding her, I'd jump on it her next heat. I've seen females bred at 10,, just depends on the dog. And how well she did with her last litter. Only thing that would keep me from breeding an old gal is if she had a rough go with it her last litter

Giving her a good quality daily vitamin will help her a lot while hunting and with recovery! I give all mine vitamins and can really tell a difference with the older dogs.

I bred my old gyp I've got now when she was around 8 and she raised 5 healthy pups. She's around 12 now and still getting the job done as of yesterday. As mentioned above it may take her longer to recoup but as long as she jumps on the gate to go I'll load her up from time to time.
