Can it get out of one of them small live traps? Try that or a big rat trap and put the dog food in a metal container, which will limit its food supply.

Buy you some syrup of epicac. This is the stuff you used to be able to buy in the drug store. I think you will have to order it from Amazon now. Anyway put some on some peanuts and put it where the rat will get it. It will make them puke -----but rats cannot puke. Place some water outside and the rat will go to the water and it will kill him when he drinks it.

You used to give it to kids in case they eat something they should not have. It is safe around kids and pets but not rats.

Make sure the rat dies outside...a dead rat gives off the worst smell ever...

I've done a good bit of rodent trapping, Ive found they really like those small marshmallows. Use a twist tie or dental floss to secure it on the tab of a large Victor Rat trap. Set it in an area that he's frequenting, and check it daily.
The marshmallows put off that sweet smell they like and when it's tied to the trap, they can't run off with it. They'll chew on it until the trap snaps.
