Deer stock walker hounds

Do walker hounds from deer running stock tend to do well on hogs? Or would they be more inclined to just chase the hogs than stop them? Anyone have any personal experience running walkers that come from deer dogs and is grit often times an issue?

I hot hog hunt with plotts and run bears with them when I get a chance.  The lease I am on is rather large and most of the members run deer dogs (mostly running walkers, July, and Triggs).  When outside of deer season, they run coyote to keep dogs in shape. 

Ever deer season I hear about deer dogs trashing on a hog, most of the time it is a very long race and deer hunters are trying to catch dogs at road crossings but, every once in a while I will hear about them bringing a hog to a bay.  Most of the bays tend to be on larger boars or barrs.

It is not rare for a lot of these deer dogs to get cut down.  My guess is that if they do get to bay a hog, a pack tends to gain strength and a desire to catch.  I could see someone wanting to get some of the running deer dog stock in their blood if they just wanted to do a bunch of chasing....I personally would not suggest it for a guy who wanted to catch and bay hogs.

years ago (20-25 years)I almost added some Croghan  coyote hound to my curs to see if I could add a little more speed to my dogs when running/trailing...back then I talked to a few guys and that was the bloodline I was referred to the most back then...supposedly they were run to catch type of dogs and some pups under a year old sometimes caught and killed coyotes on there own...that to me is plenty of grit...However, like any other strain...the reason a line is so great has to do with the person breeding them...others can say they have Croghan blood but they aren't Mr. Bill Croghan.

a young man from east Texas called me and he told me he quit most of the dogs he used to run and his main breeding for hogs now is out of running hound stock and he catches many hogs with this new line of dogs...

I can't imagine trying to go hog hunting and dogs running deer all night I use to hunt with a friend and his red Cur bitch trashed everything in the woods including deer when there were no hogs to be had it drove me insane and it wasn't even my dog now if there were hogs she was hard to beat she realaid 7 hogs in a row one night out of a sounder when I was with him.He never could break her of it.She's dead now but I can't stand a dog trashing deer....

The  good to great hunting dogs will big time trash as pups...at the beginning I dreaded putting these type of pups in the woods...because at 10 months they would run then for a few hours...and the more they did it the harder to break...

three things that I learned on those type of pups...

1. let them first bay in the pen so they can know it is acceptable to run and bay hogs

2. at 4 or 5 months old I hit them with a shock collar or cattle prod every time my deer mount touched a pup in the dog pen...of course the mount had a white paper towel tacked on with deer scent and I made sure the wind was blowing towards the pups...about 2 or 3 sessions and they will be afraid of deer...

other off game was fairly easy to break...running deer can be hard to break on pups that have been bred to stick with a track...

I have seen pups for sale pretty cheap on account they were so trashy...most great dogs start out that way...

Reuben I completely agree my best dogs were trashy as all get out and I worked really hard to break them.Having been successfull I would never want to hunt a duel purpose dog such as walkers that run deer and hogs.The red Cur bitch I previously mentioned died of old age and was not a trashy pup she was a finished trash hound lol.I don't know what he tried to break her off deer but whatever the method it was not successful. One of the things that draws me to a pup is the want to chase everything that moves even if it is a rake or shovel while cleaning a pen.I learned some good tactics on trash breaking from this forum your and Cajuns advice a couple young dogs of mine whipped into shape pretty quickly. I appreciate everyone being so open with their knowledge gained through the years.

Reuben I completely agree with you and my best dogs were extremely trashy as pups.In fact that is one of the first things I look for in a pup is the need to chase everything that moves whether it be a rake or shovel while cleaning a pen.I have had success in trash breaking my dogs and have even used some techniques mentioned on this forum by Cajun and yourself. I'm greatfull for everyone on here being so open with their knowledge gained over the years.

The Red Cur bitch I previously mentioned died of old age and she was a finished trash hound lol.I don't know what techniques he used to break her off deer,Turkey,turtles,coons, dillars,squirrel, snake and anything else that breathed but whatever it was it was unsuccessful.I would never want to own or hunt a dual purpose dogs such as walkers that run deer and hogs.If you're huntin deer I guess a caught hog every now and then may be a bonus but on the other hand if you're huntin hogs one never ending deer race ca

From southeastern nc , wilmington area but living in johnston county now but fixin to move back towards home sometime next year. And no im not running anything right now, but im trying to get started, ive got a 10 week old catahoula pup and will be lookin to add a few more dogs sometime in the near future

If you can find a running dog that'll bay good then You got something, nearly every hunter in my area who is consistently successful has some running dog blood in their dogs somewheres, I'm currently working on a few projects and adding some into my pack through breeding, I have a litter on the ground off a tough as nails speed demon coyote hound crossed over a medium range, bay the living hide off a hog cat gyp. My next step is going to be adding some walker blood of Harold parkers Bobcat hounds into the mix, both lines I'm adding into the mix are known for their toughness and run to catch mentality.

i hunt hogs an bear in NC i use plotts , treeing walkers, plott/walker crosses an plott/cur crosses an walker/american bulldog crosses they all do real well i got a buddy that only uses running walkers for hogs they do real well with them they just push them real hard an fast pertty much like running a deer but they do get the job done he kills a bunch of hogs with em....Were i hunt at the hogs run about like a deer gotta have something fast an real gritty to catch em

NC, it brings back lots of fond memories hearing "wilimington" area. My first house was just a hour north of you in Jacksonville.  I was a kid 20 yes old with my own house a wife and lots of beer. I was stupid.  I trashed house, wife and beer.
