Looking for opinions on catch dogs. I've always had straight ear dogs and the one's I've found for sale they say will catch the ear or nose. Since I've never had one that would catch the nose I wanted to hear from some of y'all that have had these dogs. I don't sell the hogs so I'm not worried about damage to the nose I'm more concerned with the dog getting cut.

I had a black pit that only caught nose. Broke a lot of snouts but was never cut.

I was around a small bull terrier that was 100% nose. She was to small to be catching on the nose like she did because she got slung around everywhere. Was off her feet a lot. In my opinion she caused big pigs to fight and thrash a lot more do to them trying to sling her off the nose. A big dog like a dogo or mastiff would do a lot better holding the nose than that little dog ever could. She would get a tooth knocked out once in a while do to the cutters closing on her jaw. You could only catch 1 decent boar with her and then she was laid up for a couple weeks recovering from injuries sustained as a result of her phsyco style.

Snout dogs are ok but that can't be the only dog caught or you will have trouble unless the dog is larger size. And like stated will take lot of mouth and face damage

I had a pit that would catch on the snout. She did get cut inside her mouth, basically where her jaw connected to her bottom jaw...she held good on the snout but to me it was sketchy,

Not to de-rail this mans post but what do yall think of one that catches the fat part of the neck behind the jaw? I got one thats 50/50 . He's either there or the ear.

My dogs will catch as soon as the catch dog hits. Sometimes they catch before he gets there depending on how big it is. If the hog tries to run they will usually try and catch it so the dog will have help. This hole catching on the nose is new to me so I didn't want to dive into getting one without hearing the good and bad. It seems like straight ear dogs are getting harder to find. I don't want a cut up dog all the time cause he's on the nose.

I've only delt with straight ear dogs. I feel an ear dog has a big advantage over a snout dog.. Leverage mostly.

I would personally stay away from the snout dog. The ones I've hunted missed a lot of hog too and there's plenty of ear dogs around if your looking into buying a new catch dog. To me a snout dog would be something I could live with if I already owned the dog and he caught there but not a dog I would go out and buy. JMO

I by no means am an expert, but I would stay away from nose dogs if I had the choice. The catchdog I have seen that took the least amount of damage was an ear dog that would almost shoulder up with the hog. I would think a nose dog would take more damage especially from a bigger hog, and grabbing the nose is only going to make a hog fight harder I would think. Just somethings to think about.

I've seen my dog catch on both. . Any hog smaller than 150 don't matter. Larger I would per fer on ear.. just make things a lot easier
