how old is he and what weight?

I have had very few cases of mange and years ago I had a recipe I used and up graded to Ivomec in the last 20 years or so...also works great for ear mites.

There are 2 kinds of mange.  Demodectic and Sarcoptic.  The first is hereditary, the second is not.  The first is called red mange.  You can't cure red mange, but you can put it in remission.  With Ivomec, use 1.5 times the regular (pound per body weight dosage), and give it down the throat EVERY DAY for 30 days minimum.  Might take 60 days.  So if you dog weighs 50 lbs., then he would normally get 1/2 cc per Ivomec.  So you would go 1.5 x.  So the dog would get 3/4 cc EVERY DAY for 30-60 days.  You can also squirt a little Ivomec on the end of a Q-tip and rub it on the affected areas.

It's VERY HARD to overdose a dog on Ivomec.  You will not hurt the dog by giving him Ivomec every day.  It's not great for him, but its better than having the mange.  I had a Rottweiler that popped up with red mange around 9 months old.  I gave him 1 1/2 cc. IVOMEC down the throat every day for 45 days.  He never had another outbreak his entire life.

ALSO . . . . PAY ATTENTION EAST TEXAS HOGDOGGERS . . . . . .

WHEN USING IVOMEC, ALWAYS USE THE REGULAR IVOMEC.  DO NOT USE "IVOMEC PLUS".  IVOMEC PLUS HAS A FLUKICIDE IN IT TO KILL LIVER FLUKES IN CATTLE.  DOGS DON'T GET LIVER FLUKES.  THE FLUKICIDE CAN CAUSE LIVER DAMAGE OVER TIME.

Don't give ivomec to collies breeds and I think the Shepard breeds as well.  It will kill them.   Any other breeds are fine with the exception of some greyhounds, they are finicky as to what some can tolerate.   All other breeds are fine on Ivomec.      I don't give orally, I inject sub Q.   I don't use regular ivomec, I use a different form of it but still, same thing with the regular stuff.  You can inject it and it's what I prefer.    One of the better heart worm worms there is and like said, ear mites, mange, etc.      The Ivomec product I worm my dogs with monthly covers just about everything but 1 kind of tape worm and that's easy enough gotten rid with a particular horse wormer.
As for the heriditary form of mange, you fight that best with the dogs own healthy immune system.  If the dogs immune system is stressed or taxed in any way,  you will have difficulties with this dogs mange till the dogs end of days.     If you are interested in really taking controle of this dogs problem, your most likely gonna have to switch the dog to a proper raw diet and leave all kibble and canned dog food out of his diet no matter how good you thing the particular brand of kibble is.  Don't even mix it in with raw!  Your dog, do what you want but there it is.

I'm in no way saying the dog has the heriditary form of mange.  If that's what it turns out to be, that's how I would address it if it were my dog.    Ivomec will knock the other out though.    Change the being area frequently or spray it with something that will kill mites in the dogs bedding area also just to be on safe side.  I do t know if mange might can live very long off their host or not.

Dectomax is really good and there have been studies done on its effectiveness with treating mange, I think there was and article in Tuskers magazine about it, never heard of giving it orally for trying to treat skin issues, I've always been told to give sub-Que or IM, IM helps get in the the bloodstream quicker and more potent....

There used to be a dog health section on this forum, it was real nice to be able to scroll through and read what others have dealt with and done.
