Any of y'all had good experiences with dogs from the pound? Was thinking about trying a couple pit crosses and see if they'd make good catch dogs. Also saw a real leggy hound mix and wondered if he could make a good dog in general for hogs. Anyways any of y'all had good experiences?

A guy I used to hunt with left the pound with an ABD cross and he's been his Alpha catch dog for 5 years, not saying we can all get that lucky but it happens

i had a big bodied american/pit cross looking dog from the pound. He caught his first time in the woods after a little encouragement when a big sow charged him n was 100% for the short time we had him after that. He ended up passing because of a prolapsed intestine. Doc said may have been the higher protein feed we started feeding him.

Id imagine youd have to go thru many to get decent strike dog...

Slim it's not that I've just getting into it. I've been steadily trying to for over a year and between land owners backing out on me and people screwing I'm slowly but steadily gaining ground I guess you could say.

we raise hogs and me and my little cousin (13) castrated one and every since then we've called him "no nuts" lol...but to the O.P. I wouldn't be afraid to try a pound dog. It would be easy to get one to catch from the pound im sure. I'd spend some time with the bulldogs at the pound and see which one had a good handle and go from there. I'd also have the olé double deuce and a shovel ready though.  I would imagine its a pretty big gamble trying a pound dog.  Pretty good chance there there for a reason. And I wont have a dog fighting idiot at my house. If they'll let you, tell them to let you see him with another dog. See how he act's.  My buddy got a real nice male from the pound one time and brought him over here smiling like a jack ass eatin briars. He was a fine looking well built bullldog. My hyper yard dog ran by and that bullldog grabbed his ass and went to town on him. He literally pulled him toward himself then re gripped and went to shaking on him before we could react. He's in doggy heaven now. I aint saying all of em are like that by no means.  Its like buying fireworks...lol. you see the pretty packaging and think about what its supposed to do. You get it home, wait for the right time,......light the fuse,..... stand back with high hopes and it turns out to be a DUD... I think alot of dogs end up in the pound because they have a major flaw and someone doesn't want to properly deal with the animal, so they dump it on a dirt road somewhere hoping someone else will pick it up and fix there mistakes.

Me and my hunting buddies get pits from the pound to catch with and luckily we've had more good dogs than bad. I would be hesitant to try to get a strike dog from the pound. A quality strike dog is tougher to come by and I would rather not mess with a dog that may not have any hunt in him to begin with. I'm willing to bet a lot of pits end up at the pound due to having some level of dog aggression or are tough to keep contained. That's why it's so important to have a proper kennel set up so you can keep dogs safely separated that don't get along. My #1 advice would be to not just get the first dog you see. Take your time and look hard for the physical qualities you want. There are plenty of pits to choose from. Don't end up in a position with a decent dog that doesn't catch as well as you would like because he needs an extra inch of leg under him, etc. rather than finding the dog that has the physical qualities that can make him great.

I would say any type of dog can be found at the pound but you will have to go thru a bunch to get one that would be good. Now on the bull dog side most at the pound are from people who got them for pets raised em till one or two then couldn't keep em or got tired of having a dog.  Plus side to these are that they where probly house pets and are some what easy to handle and might know basic commands. Now for the catch part pit bulls are bred to do catch work so not a biggie most will catch might not be a all ear dog but I would say a pound pit would be around 80 % likely to catch and work out. Where as a bay dog 50% and a strike dog around 15 % just my thinking

The only thing I hate is that they get fixed so if you get a dog that top shape you can't ever start a line from them

Did the vet say why higher protein feed would cause that? I just started feeding a higher protein and higher fat feed, my dogs put on some weight that looks like muscle, thicker necks and chest, but they seem kinda hyper now, not bad just a bit. It's the taste of the wild high prairie. I don't want to mess Em up

I get Bulldogs that way. It's the most ethical and cheapest way to cull. They have a money back guarantee so if one doesn't work the way you like go back and trade it in. Where I messed up I started dating a chick that works there and it didn't work so it's all bad for me down at the pound.

Craigslist used to have a ton of free pits that people were giving up on. I have a couple buddy's that get pits from the pound for catch dogs, I know folks on here don't like hearing it but he swears by the blue ones, says they've made the best catch dogs he's ever had. Another buddy of mine says when he needs a CD he drives around the barrio and when he sees a nice pit with no collar he calls it over and loads it up. Lol! Now I don't know if that right or not but he usually finds one in a day or two

I'm friends with a fella that has caught more hogs with dogs than I could begin to imagine, and he has owned quite a few bulldogs from the pound that have turned out great for him. I wouldn't think twice about picking one up from the pound if it was well built and well mannered.

Watch out guys there's breeders on this site that think their Bulldogs chit golden nuggets. It's impossible to find good catch dogs in their minds at the pound. Hahaha!!!

Opinions vary...with that said, I'm sure all those old dogmen that developed or maintained quality dogs went to the pound to find their next great stud or brood bitch Grin
